Time-in

A time-in card is a tool for helping students regulate their emotions in a supportive way.  A time-in approach provides a safe, structured way for young people to acknowledge their feelings, take a break, and receive guidance if needed.

Young people who are given a time-in card can show this card to their class teacher if they feel they need a short break to regulate their emotions. Pupils then make their way over the to the Support for Learning department where they can make use of different strategies and resources such as talking with a member of staff or using a mindfulness pack.

There are many benefits to time-in including:

  • Empowering pupils to recognise when they need a break and take proactive steps to calm down before emotions escalate..
  • Encouraging pupils to identify their emotions, which is an essential skill for long-term emotional intelligence and problem-solving.
  • Effective learning- once pupils have had a moment to reset, they are more likely to re-engage with learning in a positive and meaningful way.
