What is Support for Learning?

In 2008, a guide to Getting it right for every child (GIRFEC) was published by the Scottish Government. GIRFEC was designed in order for there to be ‘a consistent framework and shared language for promoting, supporting, and safeguarding the wellbeing of children and young people’ across Scotland and is now enshrined in law. This, along with the Curriculum to Excellence and the standards for teaching has been to designed to create an educational system which is inclusive (GTCS, 2021).

Some children and young people need additional support to benefit fully from their education.

Additional support needs can arise, in the short or long term, from a variety of circumstances including:

  • the learning environment
  • family circumstances
  • health or disability needs
  • social and emotional factors

At Hillhead High School we employ a range of support and help to ensure we meet the needs of all learners.

Some of the supports we offer include:

.

Furthermore, the UNCRC (UN Convention on the Rights of the Child) sets out the rights of young people. Articles 28 and 29 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child are focused on a child’s right to education and help within education to ensure they achieve. All children and young people have the right to get the support they need to reach their full learning potential
