Good cheer to you all from Lochend as we prepare for the holiday season ! It’s been a busy last month of term, with exciting things this week like karaoke in the street dining area and staff quizzing in the library.
Our last great reading recommendation of this year is, “An Illustrated History of Urban Legends” by Adam Allsuch Boardman. Don’t worry, it’s an easy read compared to the very long title. A good, creepy read is almost the law at Christmas – and this book doesn’t let you down. 
From ghosts to UFOs and Yetis, there is very little left out of this packed book which is lots of fun. Although big on graphics, there’s a lot of great detail about your favourite spooky stuff and I certainly learned loads reading it. For instance did you know that there was a rumour Elvis is still alive? Or that the Japanese ghost Ala Manto is said to haunt bathrooms? Dive in and enjoy this just after your Christmas Dinner !
If that isn’t to your taste, the library has a very varied selection of new arrivals for you to enjoy. Do you like Dungeons and Dragons or other types of Cosplay? Always wanted to know how Cosplayers do the make up for their amazing looks? 
Or simply want to take your make up skills to a different level? This book is for you. It is a step by step, no nonsense guide to come up with amazing looks to take your Cosplaying to the next level.
Last but not least, of course Boxing Day comes just after Christmas Day and for football fans, it’s a great day to watch lots of our favourite teams complete. If you’re not lucky enough to see a game this year, maybe this book will fill that gap for you. A shorter book, but packed full of football stars, meet, “Football GOATS, the Greatest Footballers of All Time”. A wide reaching and all encompassing book, it covers worldwide women and men’s football and is a great read when you’re coming to the last of the Christmas chocolates. 
Now shhh…as the library is deserted this morning, not even a mouse is stirring. But they will be during lunchbreak. From all of us at Lochend, have a peaceful Christmas and New Year and happy reading.
They have learned really quickly and been reliable too. Here they are proudly with their Reading Leader badges on their ties. Celebrations too for our Senior Reader Leaders who enjoyed last year so much they have come back and helped train our new recruits. There is only 1 Senior Reading Leader in the photo, however we do have 3 in total. Our full team of 7 will make the library an even more brilliant place to be ! Well done to them all !
This activity was really popular and on the first day of the sheets being available, they had to be replenished. It is amazing how the library can provide a calm atmosphere in such a busy school.
It’s the end of term and the library is unusually quiet due to the October holidays. In Lochend, flying off the shelves just now is Vampire Diaries. It’s back on TV again, and lots of our students are possibly discovering it for the first time. Full of page turning stories, the books tell of Elena and Stefan and their adventures, being teenage vampires and navigating their strange world – and their relationship ! Don’t go into a cemetery late at night like these teens did – it always ends badly ! Go on, read it for Hallowe’en !
Here’s our very beautiful section – the fiction shelves – which are arranged by genre to help you find your next read more easily. There are hundreds of books to choose from, and if you’re not sure what to pick the School Librarian will help you. Thank you to the library assistants in schools who often help us tidy up.
Welcome back to school Eastbank ! It has been a lonely library without you all. Can you believe our library actually looks this big? Isn’t it weird looking at it without any pupils in?
But what if your best friend starts doing things they shouldn’t really be doing? And it’s serious. Combined with trouble at home, the Final Year is a great read and one you can identify with concerning your first year at a new school.
What an amazing reader request has just come in to Eastbank. The graphic novel of Unfamiliar and it’s follow up have arrived. An adorable wee witch – Planchette – moves into a haunted house together with her familiar Marlow. Not a problem for a witch you’d think ! But a bargain haunted house throws up some funny problems for the young witch and her familiar. A cosy read about insiders, outsiders and all those in-between, there’s not much you can’t love about Unfamiliar. Ask Mrs Marshall to reserve both copies if you want double the fun.

Quick Reads cover all sorts of different subjects and genres, so there is something to suit everyone. From wanting a quick story to read before bed, to not enjoying longer books, Quick Reads aren’t restricted to a single group of pupils. I use some Quick Reads stories to tell to pupils as well, I think they are great. And many of the books are also on dyslexia friendly paper too – so if you have dyslexia, the background printing of the stories should make them easier to read. Check them out the next time you are in the library !
The display is looking far more contemporary and the addition of the new stock has really brightened the place up.
participate in the entirely voluntary book dare scheme ! It’s a great example for the pupils to see how many staff, across all different subject areas in the school, love reading too. And the staff really enjoy showing off their, “Ask me what I’m reading?” badges as well.And that’s not all. Also, we’re really looking forward to World Book Day in March. The tokens have just arrived ! Watch this space and we’ll tell you what we get up to all through next month.
