The football books requests have started coming in and no doubt they will be popular in the library… taking bets on how long before the shelf will be empty again!

Bannerman is a Reading School!
Cleveden & Book Week Scotland
Book Club is Back!
In collaboration with the English Department, we have brought back the S1 book club in the Cleveden school library. This is the opportunity for pupils to chat about the books they have been borrowing from the library or they have been reading in class. We used paper fortune tellers with question prompts inside it to spark the conversation about recent favourite reads. The book “Ghost Boys” by Jewell Parker Rhodes was a hit with the boys, who found its plot very engaging and interesting!
We Had a Scholastic Book Fair for Book Week Scotland!
Pupils enjoyed finding new books at the Scholastic Book Fair during Lunch which coincided with Book Week Scotland. It was a good opportunity for pupils to own a book also thanks to some vouchers!
Bannerman R.I.P. (Read in Peace)
In the broad daylight of the lunch break, Bannerman High School library was infused by a eerie atmosphere as the horror books spirits’ made their presence known among the shelves. Their purpose was to inspire the participants of our Halloween spooky stories session! Our lunchtime writing session was the perfect chance for everyone to have a go at writing their own creepy story, or read a horror book in their quiet time. The participants also got some sweets in return because, obviously, it wouldn’t be Halloween without treats! Two of our talented students volunteered to decorate the treat box, transforming it into something straight out of a horror movie. The box was decorated with a spooky night setting, and filled with Halloween sweets for everyone to enjoy!
Until next Halloween, keep reading, keep writing, and stay terrifically creative! 👻
New Books in Cleveden!
A focus on Senior Fiction
This year, two lovely groups of S1 has declared that the library is their favourite place in the school, and they have been stopping by after school to draw, to read and to chat every day until closing time. This is wonderful because it is the busiest the school library has been in two years! Along with completing school inductions to the S1 and explaining the benefits of having (and not losing!) a library cards, the librarian also decided to focus on the Senior Fiction section.
In fact, at the start of a new school year, Advance Higher English pupils need to choose their book, so a new display has been made with a mix of classic AH titles, leisurely reads, and contemporary fiction. It has been good to have a wider range of books to recommend when pupils inquire about the topic they’d like to choose, because now the library can better cater to them, too. As a result, more S6 pupils are borrowing from the library and some of the AH English group often come to study together here. Here is a view of what the library has to offer for our Senior readers!

Bannerman in June
As the school year is slowly drawing to close and everyone in school seems focused on the EuroCup and the holidays, the English department has been completing the evidence portfolio for Bannerman to achieve its Reading Schools Award. One of the last projects was the focus on a book bingo, which quite a few pupils have completed! Surely they will be excited for their reward.
The Smithycroft News 👩🏫
April was a pretty exciting month in Smithycroft! As we share the library with the Careers Advisor, we had a chat and decided to team up and make a “Careers shelf” with the Careers’ own University prospects on one side and the library’s Work & Exams Advice books on the other side. It is a small section for us but we will tackle it with more books getting ordered soon!
A lovely group of library regulars was excited about the books that they borrowed. Here is a top 3 of recommendations by Ashfa, Lucia and Alaa who love kpop, manga and play in the school band.
