We are super proud of Eastbank Academy S2-S4 pupils who interviewed Michael Lee Richardson, the school’s Author in Residence, for the Autumn issue of Swatch magazine. You can read the interview below or browse the magazine here.

Are you looking for some inspiration for picking your next summer read? 🙂
I created a Summer Reading List with my top picks:
I would also recommend checking Libby for new eBooks and Audiobooks added this July:

Omima, Anete, Mason, Nerea, Elise and Rabia from S1 and Mohammed, Emmanuel, Gina, Ciaran and Wilbur from S2 were nominated by their English teachers and the school librarian for the Reader of the Year award. All pupils received books and stickers wrapped and decorated by S6 Literacy Prefects Abby and Carragh who also announced the winners. Congratulations to all avid readers!
Me and Mr Brown organised Heartstopper club to celebrate the extremely popular graphic novel series and TV Show. We watched and discussed all episodes of the first season and pupils decorated the library with colouring sheets. We can’t wait for season 2 and will be reading all other Alice Oseman’s books in the meantime!
To celebrate and highlight all the author events that took place in the Library this year, me and Miss Pye created #SmithyReads display in the school hallway.
My favourite thing is definitely the pupils’ feedback! Here are some examples:
“Amazing! Her books are really interesting!” Ben L. (S1) about Maisie Chan
“Listening to them explaining their creative process and their backgrounds – it was amazing.” Amy M. (S1) about Metaphrog
“Really got the group together, made us feel a part of something and transported us into his experiences.” Struan Y. (S3) about Alex Wheatle
“Super unique, it didn’t feel like a lesson.” Daniel S. (S3) about Tawona Sithole
Looking forward to hosting even more author events and workshops in the next school year!
Smithycroft pupils joined many other people across Scotland and pledged to read for at least 6 minutes on Wednesday 11 May. The campaign aiming to highlight the positive impact reading can have on mental health and wellbeing was a huge success – in the end there was over 450 000 minutes pledges which far exceeded the initial goal! All Smithycroft pupils had an opportunity to read during the first period – I can’t imagine a better way to start a school day! 🙂
S3 pupils got to meet new literary star Ely Percy – their coming of age novel Duck Feet is just about to sell out of the third print run! Ely read from their book and answered questions about writing and publishing. Our very talented pupil Murron, who interviewed Ely for library eMagazine (coming out soon!) got her own copy of Duck Feet with a special dedication from Ely.
Young artists from S1 and S2 had an inspiring session with Metaphrog – the award-winning graphic novelists Sandra Marrs and John Chalmers. Pupils learned about the process of making a comic book, the history of graphic novels and got some useful tips on creating their own characters.
Wee Write festival is an annual festival full of literary events for young people organized by Glasgow Life.
This year, our S1 and S2 pupils got to meet Tamsin Winter, the award-winning author of Being Miss Nobody, Jemima Small Versus the Universe and Girl (In Real Life). Tamsin spoke about her books, social media, body image and mental health. Tamsin even stayed a little longer to answer pupils’ questions (there were many!) and all pupils got a gorgeous signed bookmark.
Our brilliant Literacy Prefects organised a Sponsored Readathon from Friday the 11th of February until Friday the 25th of February. Eastbank Academy pupils and staff read as many books as they could while being sponsored by their friends, families or teachers.
All money collected was donated to MindOut – a charity working to improve the mental health and well-being of the LGBTQ+ community.
Smithycroft Library and English department are organising a special competition for LGBT History Month this year. By reading and reviewing a book from the library “Read with Pride” display or e-book/audiobook from Libby, you can earn house points and help your house beat the opponents!
Remember to collect a review form and a free bookmark from the Library.
Thanks to everyone who already submitted their review, but don’t worry if you haven’t already – you still have time to earn house points! Deadline is end of March 😊
May the best house (and reader) win!
