Lots of Newness in Bellahouston

New School Year, New S1s, New Library Layout, New Librarian, New Books!

A huge welcome to our new S1s. S1 inductions are ongoing and our library class visit timetable is up and running. We’ve been super busy at interval and lunchtimes as well.

Check out the new books that have arrived this month, including some amazing books in different languages to add to our growing collection.

LGBT Youth Scotland Silver Award

Great news – we were successful in gaining our LGBT Youth Scotland Silver award!

It’s been a real pleasure to be part of the LGBT Champions Group and to work with our wonderful LGBT Pupil Group. We still have lots of work to do in the library but some highlights so far have been:

Participatory Budgeting sessions – lots of new LGBTQI+ books added to our growing collection

Lunchtime library meetings with the LGBT pupil group

Author event with Michael Lee Richardson – and creating a beautiful Pride poem

Creating displays to celebrate various LGBTQI+ events and decorating the library with relevant posters

LGBT Pupil group deciding on how to present the collection

Ongoing:

Creating an LGBTQI+ directory, packed full of information and booklists

A full audit of our LGBTQI+ collection including information on representation

Tuesday Chill Out

The Tuesday Chill Out Club is back. A quiet space at lunchtime for reading (with beanbags and cushions!), mindfulness colouring, playing chess, studying, chilling out and winding down.

It will now be co-run by my S6 helpers; Amber, Amanda and Reagan.

We’ve decided to open it up to all year groups so that seniors have a quiet space to study in the run up to exams.

All Saints -Chessnuts, New Books, Black History Month, Book Club

A busy few weeks in All Saints Library!

The Chessnuts Chess Club has started on Mondays at lunchtime. We’ve had a great turn out of players, some new to the game and some improving their skills and helping out the others.

We received lots of new fiction and non-fiction stock as well. A packed New Books display.

We are celebrating Black History Month with our 3 displays of amazing titles.

Our senior helpers Amber and Reagan have been hard at work; categorising books by genre, putting up our Halloween display and starting our new lunchtime book club on Tuesdays (with Amanda).

Lochend – Comics, Lattes, Black History Month and LGBTQI+ Safe Space

It’s been a busy few weeks here in Lochend Library.

We had a visit from the wonderful Neil Slorance who inspired our S2 class to create their own comic characters. This was part of our EAL Reading Group Project which was supported by the Scottish Government School Library Improvement Fund.

We are celebrating Black History Month with our displays of non-fiction and fiction. Come and check them out.

The LGBTQI+ safe space is taking place in the library at lunchtime on Fridays. Pop along if you fancy a chat in a welcoming space 🙂

And finally, a big thanks to our senior barista students, Nadine and Aiden, for the two free iced lattes. Delicious!

Michael Lee Richardson – Poetry Workshop

A massive thanks to Michael Lee Richardson for his amazing LGBTQI+ Pride workshop with a group of our brilliant S2 pupils. They had such a great time working on blackout poems, creating a collaborative poem and discussing a range of topics from The Gorbals Vampire to storylining for Hollyoaks. Poem and pics below!

All Colours, All Pride – a group poem

Pride smells nice, like lavender
pillow spray that makes you sleep.
Pride is calming,
a mix of blue and red.

Pride is dyed lilac hair.

Pride is violets,
and sunflowers,
roses
and dandelions,
Pride is daisies.

Pride is yellow blonde hair.

Pride is blood and rage and danger
and balloons.
Pride is blush
and nail polish
and lipstick
and eyeshadow
and jasper.

Pride is a red pen.

Pride is a blue sea ocean,
calm and relaxed.
Pride is a clear blue sky.

Pride is sad and upset.

Pride is the blue stripes in the trans flag.

Pride is blue stars and seagulls,
Pride is the police,
Pride is drowning and depressed.

Pride is cold and winter.

Pride is orange, like Garfield.
Pride is a Minion.
Pride is confusion.

Pride is the colour of fruits, vegetables,
drinks.

Pride is all around,
Wherever you are.
