ENGLISH AS AN ADDITIONAL LANGUAGE

At Drumchapel High we are proud to be a multi cultural multi faith school that embraces our diversity and  positivity that comes from our learners and families who speak English as a second language.  Infact,  many of our learners are not only bilingual  but speak many languages.

Language acquisition goes through many stages in the journey to becoming fluent English speakers;  New to English, Early Aquisition, Developing Competence and Fluent.

Our first priority with any learner is to allow them to settle into the school family and become comfortable with school  routines and  the Drumchapel Roar; Resilience, Opportunities, Achieving and Respect.  After this settling period where learners are immersed in English within the school community we look to then assess their English Acquisition level.

This assessment has been designed for EAL staff  to assess EAL pupils’ basic English literacy and their basic level of literacy in their first language. Literacy in their first language means that pupils will have transferable skills.

This information is then shared with their class teachers informing them of the learner’s English level and strategies to support them on their learning journey.

Part of this support includes  the use of assistive technologies which allow teachers and learners to translate and communicate more effectively.
