Business

The Business Education department offers a broad provision of courses to S1-6 pupils. The department prides itself on having high aspirations and positive relationships with our young people, which helps lead to positive levels of attainment for our pupils.

BGE – S1-3

S1

Our S1 course is split into two sections – ICT and an Introduction to Business. In the ICT section, pupils will be introduced to the basics of various Microsoft Office packages such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint. In the An Introduction to Business section, pupils will apply their learning from a variety of Business topics to come up with their own business and create their own business plan.  Finally, pupils will have the opportunity to design their own app as part of the Make it Happen app design challenge.  One pupil’s entry from the entire year group is selected as a winner, who then works with industry experts to make their design a reality which is then launched on the Apple App Store!

S2

With the foundations of ICT skills being taught in S1, our S2 course goes in to more depth with these software packages. Pupils will enjoy opportunities to further develop their skills in Word skills and PowerPoint skills, but will also be introduced to and develop their skills in Databases (Microsoft Access).  Pupils continue to develop their business minds and creativity skills by designing their own theme park, and are also introduced to coding during the Make Code Arcade unit – in this unit, pupils have the opportunity to create their own games which they can then play on our Kitronik Arcade consoles.

S3

In S3, pupils can select either Administration & IT or Business Management. This Broad General Education phase will help best prepare pupils for their National 5 courses in S4. In S3 Admin & IT, pupils develop their skills in the use of the following:

• Microsoft Word
• Microsoft Excel (spreadsheets)
• Microsoft Access (databases)
• Microsoft PowerPoint
• Microsoft Publisher
• Using the internet to arrange travel and accommodation

In S3 Business, pupils will enjoy opportunities to develop their knowledge a variety of topics, including The Role of Business in Society, Types of Organisations, Customer Satisfaction, Business Growth and Objectives, Internal and External Influences on a Business and Corporate Social Responsibility.  Pupils build their financial and numeracy skills by looking at a variety of financial documents, including Cash Budgets, Income Statements, Breakeven Analysis and Job Cost Statements.  Pupils also enjoy opportunities to take part in creative projects, such as the Subway Challenge, Barrs Product Development Challenge and their own mini Business Assignment.

Our department understands that pupil attendance at supported study is a key part in raising attainment for our young people. Supported study will be on offer throughout the year and these sessions will be communicated with pupils and shared via the school’s X page.

You can keep up to date with our department on our X feed @DHSBizEdandHE.

Visits to local businesses as well as in-school visits from businesses take place in order to enhance pupils’ learning experiences. As a department, we are always keen to develop further business links – if you feel that you can offer your time, please get in touch with Steven Lamb (Faculty Head) to discuss further.
