At Crookston Castle Primary, we are proud to be working towards our Silver Rights Respecting Schools Award accreditation with UNICEF UK.
What is the Silver Award?
The Silver Award recognises that we are a school where:
- Children’s rights are known, understood and respected by everyone.
- The principles of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) are embedded in our ethos and curriculum.
- Pupils are actively involved in making our school a safe, respectful and inclusive place for all.
How we are working towards achieving Silver?
To gain the Silver award, we are working together as a whole school community to:
- Create and use Class Charters linked to children’s rights.
- Established a Steering Group (Rights Ambassadors) of pupils and staff to promote rights.
- Rights Ambassadors create and deliver weekly presentations to the whole school about the Right of the Week. They set weekly challenges for pupils to engage with their rights.
- Ensure that pupil voice is central to school decision making. The further develop this we have introduced a variety of Pupil leadership groups.
- Promote respect, fairness and equality in all areas of school life.
- The Rights Ambassadors created a Playground charter based on their writes.
- Link our learning to global citizenship, understanding children’s rights locally and around the world. We have began celebrating ‘Rights around the World’ each month at assembly.
- As a school we have recently developed a new promoting positive relationships policy to support pupil rights.
- The Rights Ambassadors created a School Values video to celebrate the successes within the school.
What This Means for Our Pupils?
- Children know and understand their rights and responsibilities
- Pupils feel respected, valued and heard.
- Everyone works together to create a school where kindness and respect are at the heart of daily life.
- Our pupils are developing confidence to stand up for themselves and for others.
Our Next Steps
We are working towards collating our evidence for our upcoming accreditation audit. This accreditation recognises schools that place children’s rights at the centre of their daily practices.
We look forward to updating you on our progress!
