🎅 🎄 A YMI Christmas 🎄 🤶

Our YMI elves have been busying away creating lots of fun Christmas music activities for you all and we’re so excited to share them with you.

More importantly, we can’t wait to see you join in and we hope you will share your class activities with us on Twitter by tagging @GlasgowCREATE.

Primary 1-3 – Father Christmas…He got stuck!

P1-3 children will love joining in with this Christmas action song.

The song’s simple and familiar melody (Frere Jacques) is accompanied with Makaton signs that match the beat and rhythm of the music. PDF includes flashcards to help with learning the signs.

When you are confident with your singing and actions, you can add percussion instruments to your performance!

The video and PDF will show you how.

Primary 1-3 – The Little Church Bell

This song has a lovely message: Everyone is important – no matter how small your voice is!

Join in with the chorus of the song with Mrs. Brackenridge. You might even want to add some jingle bells and other Christmassy sounding instruments!

The PDF has the lyrics to help you learn.

‘I am the Earth’ – A Citywide COP26 Music Project

As the world’s eyes look upon Glasgow ahead of COP26, the CREATE YMI & IMS team have launched an ambitious citywide music project based on the song ‘I am the Earth’ by Australian composer Glyn Lehmann.

Our tutors have created fabulous resources around this song for teachers to use in class. All the material, including lyric sheet, percussion rhythms, video lessons for early, first and second level as well as demonstration video and backing track can be found here.

The project will culminate in the creation of a video performance of recordings gathered from all schools and all stages citywide, which will then be broadcast at the start of COP26, along with special live performances from schools at high profile events during COP26.

In order to be part of the finished recording, please video your class performance along to the backing track provided and share via OneDrive to gw16oneillmartin@glow.ea.glasgow.sch.uk by Friday 8th October.

‘Love from Glasgow’ Competition

Music is a wonderful way to share messages of positivity with our friends, families and communities. A simple song or piece of music has the power to put a smile on anyone’s face, to make them laugh or to remind them how much they are loved and appreciated.

We invite you to enter our ‘Love from Glasgow’ competition with your own isolation creation!

Your challenge is to write a song or a piece of music, record it and send it as a message to someone – think about friends or family that you are unable to visit right now, or those people in the community that you would like to thank for what they are doing to help us. Follow the instructions below to enter the competition!

To get started…

Visit the CREATE Instrumental Music Service Youtube channel where our team have been sharing their tips and tricks for song writing and creating music at home.

Using technology

Explore apps like GarageBand to create chord progressions for backing tracks or to add a variety of instruments to your composition.

Writing music down

Don’t know how to write music? That’s ok! You can improvise and record as you go or create a graphic score using lines, shapes and pictures.

Writing lyrics

A great place to start could be using the structure and melody of an existing song and writing your own lyrics. Our videos have more tips for lyrics, rhyming and structure.

Making instruments

If you don’t have any instruments at home, make some! Be creative with what you have – watch our videos and learn how to create rhythms with boxes and wooden spoons!

To enter the competition:

✓ Record a video of your creation (max 2 mins) and post it on Twitter
✓ Tell us who your musical message is for and why
✓ Tag @GlasgowCREATE
✓ Use #LovefromGlasgow and #GetGlasgowComposing

Deadline for entries: Friday 19th June 2020

Prize vouchers for 1st (£150) 2nd (£100) 3rd (£50) place kindly donated by Haydock Music.
