Happy Tuesday / 12th May 2020

Hello P5,

I hope you had a lovely holiday weekend and managed to get ouside and enjoy the sunshine. As last week’s focus at St Albert’s was the outdoors the school staff have put together a short video for you to watch about being outside and enjoying nature. Why don’t you send me some pictures of you outside to post on our class blog.

Today’s Learning Tasks

Literacy-

In class we completed some work on identifing similes and metaphors.

A metaphor is a word or a phrase used to describe something as if it were something else.

For example: A wave of terror washed over him.

The terror isn’t actually a wave, but a wave is a good way to describe the feeling.

Another example is: Jess is dynamite.

Jess isn’t made of dynamite, but it’s a good way to explain how exciting she is.

A simile describes something by comparing it to something else using the words like or as.

For example:

  • The snake moved like a ripple on a pond.

  • It was as slippery as an eel.

  • Jess is as graceful as a gazelle.

Watch the short video clips from BBC bitesize (link below) and then try the short activities to check your understanding of similes and metaphors.

Maths-

Calculating perimeter

The perimeter is the distance all the way around the outside of a 2D shape. To work out the perimeter, add up the lengths of all the sides.

Watch the BBC bitesize video (link below) and then attempt the three activities. Good luck!

Remember you can send me your completed work or post a comment to let me know if you are finding it too easy or a bit tricky.

Good afternoon P5 / 7th May 2020

Hello boys and girls,

I do hope you managed to get some fresh air and sunshine yesterday. This week the St Albert’s focus has been the outdoors and getting exercise. Using the map below can you plan a walk near our school that our class could take when we return to school.

Literacy-

Writing Task

In term 3 we created comic strips about superhero characters. A storyboard is a bit like a comic strip. It is a visual representation of the key actions within a film/television show/a book. Look at the example below. You will notice that it has:

  • Individual pictures of the key scenes
  • A brief description of the action in each shot
  • Different camera shots

Try to create your own storyboard/comic strip. You should pick your favourite film/television series/book, and turn it into a storyboard/comic strip. Remember to provide a brief description of the key scenes.

Remember you can email me your work or post  comments on the blog and I will reply.

This weekend (Friday-Monday) would have been a holiday weekend so there will be no posts on the blog until Tuesday 12th May.

Enjoy your weekend,

Mrs Hughes

Good morning P5 / 6th May 2020

Hi everyone,

It’s a beautiful day outside so make sure you get some fresh air and exercise.

Today’s Tasks

Science-

Plant growth

Plants need air, light, warmth, water and nutrients to be healthy. If they are healthy, they can continue making their own food through photosynthesis

  • Plants get the light and warmth they need from the sun, their leaves turn it into food
  • They breathe in the air
  • They need the right amount of water, from rain or a watering can
  • Plants get their nutrients from the soil, from their roots up to the stem

Learn about what plants need to live by watching these short videos from BBC bitesize and then complete the activity tasks (link below).

Miss Cohen’s science experiments-

Why not have- a- go at trying out Miss Cohen’s experiments by using things you can find around the house.

Remember to take a photograph or video of your results and email them to me and I will post them on the class blog.

Good afternoon P5 / 4th May 2020

Happy Monday P5,

Art-

I’m in a creative mood today so why not join me in creating some art work. Have you heard of the very famous artist Pablo Picasso. Why not watch the short BBC video (link below) telling us what inspired him.

The artist also talks about the way he painted people. Rather than painting them the way they looked, he explored the face from different angles. He demonstrates studying a person’s profile and then their whole face to show how the facial features can appear to change when seen from a different angle. Why not have-a-go at creating your own Picasso picture by cutting up faces from magazines to make new ones using his techniques. P5 you are very talented artistically so I would love if you could take a picture of your art work and send it to me to post on the class blog.

Maths-

In term 3 our class worked on time intervals and reading 5 minute interval times on an analog clock. Try the time problems below and let me know if you find them easy, a bit tricky or hard.

Literacy-

Can you uplevel these sentences to make them more exciting?

  1. Iqra went to the cinema and watched the new film with her friend.
  2. The weather was cold and Musab needed to wear a coat.
  3. Do you want to come to my party said Fatimah.
  4. What a super surprise Daniyal.

Remember to email me your art work and comments-

Take care,

Mrs Hughes

Good morning P5 / 1st May 2020
