Good morning Primary 7,
As it is Outdoor Learning week, here are a few research tasks that you can do at home:
1. How many trees fell in the local area/Glasgow during storm Ali? What impact will this have on the environment? Consider factors such as air pollution, air quality in cities, habitat destruction.
Why is it important to plant trees in urban areas? Can you cite green cities that are modelling this successfully?

2. Identify the tree species we have in our school and local area. Tally your results, research the different species of tree, research their origins and determine whether they are native.
What are the benefits/disadvantages of having these species of tree in the school or local area?
Which plants could we plant or add that would be beneficial to our environment?

WHY PLANT TREES
combat climate change
by absorbing CO2 from the atmosphere, trees help to combat climate change.
prevent flooding
trees protect soil from erosions, reduce surface run-off and slow large floods.
support agriculture
trees improve soil condition and prevent topsoil erosion as well as creating shade and shelter for livestock.
create wood fuel
the carbon emitted in burning wood is balanced out by what is taken in by the growing tree.
On Scotland roads 100mph winds from storm Ali batter the country. A lot of roads across Glasgow are blocked because of fallen trees and crumbling buildings. I always see fallen trees on the floor when I am going to school but I don’t have an exact number. It is important to plant trees because they give you oxygen and without oxygen you cant breath. Trees help by slowing down storms and it gives us paper and wood. It is also the home to many animals like squirrels , birds, koalas, spider monkeys and tree frogs. Some of the most green cites in the world are Amsterdam, Denmark and Bristol.
So far I have found 4 trees that have fell down in our local area
The areas most affected by storm Ali are Perthshire, Aberdeenshire, Angus and pockets of Argyll Scottish and southern Elactricity networks have restored power to 16,000 thousand homes but a further 4,900 are still without electricity. Two people died because of storm Ali. The impact is very bad because a lot of animals and insects live in the trees. It is also important to grow more trees in urban areas beause trees produce oxygen.
#outdootlearning #playeveryday #awayandplay
In my area several amount of trees fell but I don’t have an exact number. I know that some animal habitats could have been destroyed by the high winds and also peoples cars and homes could have also been destroyed. That is why we should always be careful when the winds are high .
It is important to plant trees because they are the reason we are all alive and breathing. Trees breath in the carbon dioxide and breath out oxygen which is what we then breath in. Trees also help animals like birds they are useful to birds because birds nest in trees and also lay their eggs in their nests. Then after some time a baby bird hatches and needs a place to survive until they are older. That is why it is important to grow trees in the world.
Many trees that fell during Storm Ali were vulnerable because of a combination of prolonged dry conditions and soil contraction, a garden expert with the National Botanic Gardens said.
The number of trees lost in the storm has yet to be confirmed but Séamus O’Brien, head gardener of Kilmacurragh Botanic Gardens in Co Wicklow, said the storm provided further proof that climate change was generating different wind patterns that were detrimentally affecting Irish tree populations.
Unusually, the National Botanic Gardens in Dublin had a horrific time but Kilmacurragh got off lightly with the loss of just one birch tree, he said.
Storm unlikely to hit Ireland this weekend, Met Éireann says
New storm could strike this weekend, says Met Éireann
Potentially ‘nasty’ storm may hit Ireland this weekend
Trees, especially larger ones, were most vulnerable when there were “soggy wet” soil conditions, but when the opposite applied – ie dry conditions and soil contraction – they were vulnerable too and “more prone to rocking”, he said.
The effects of climate change, such as a changing of seasons, detrimentally affected trees, he added. In the case of Ireland it had also caused a change in prevailing winds, especially when storms arise.
I forgot to do the, why plant trees in urban areas ? and green cites the are modelling this successfully?
why plant trees in urban areas ?
Trees absorb air pollution (CO₂) from the atmosphere
Trees lower air temperatures making urban areas more inhabitable for humans and wildlife.

IM DOING A MIX
WHY PLANT TREES?~
Trees contribute to their environment by providing oxygen, improving air quality, climate amelioration, conserving water, preserving soil, and supporting wildlife. During the process of photosynthesis, trees take in carbon dioxide and produce the oxygen we breathe. As the biggest plants on the planet, they store carbon, stabilise the soil. They also provide us with the materials for tools and shelter.Trees reduce the amount of storm water runoff, which reduces erosion and pollution in our waterways and may reduce the effects of flooding. Trees provide food, protection, and homes for many birds and mammals.
WELL I HOPE I DID THIS ALRIGHT THIS WAS REALLY FUN THANK YOU
🙂 <3
Many trees fell during the storm Ali which is harmful because it is wasting a lot of paper. Also trees falling causes air pollution which is harmful to the environment because it causes many diseases. I found out that there was lot’s of apples trees around my house. #outdoorlearning

Hi miss Cohn ,
I do have some trees in my area , most of them are ash trees some are horse chestnut .
1. It didn’t tell me the exact amount of trees that fell during storm Ali , but I believe well over 1000 trees had fell over in the UK . Trees provide us with oxygen , paper , furniture , food and home to many birds and creatures . One tree can give oxygen to 2 people through 1 year . Trees also breath in carbon dioxide which prevents the earth from climate change . Green Amsterdam,Copenhagen,San Francisco,Bristol and Stockholm.
2.ash trees are most found in North America and horse chestnut trees are mostly found in southeastern Europe. I think we should plant horse chestnut trees because we have already got one in our school.
I hope I did well on my home work I really enjoyed this, thanks

Homework w.b. 5 week 1st OCTOBER!!!
There were a number of trees that had uprooted because of STORM ALI. Due to heavy winds this has caused a number of trees to fal over, and cause major damage to electric wires!!!
The loss of trees has a major effect on the environment e.g one of the effects is if there was no trees it would lead to temperature change which then can be harmful to plants and animals. Trees also play a critical role in absorbing the greenhouses gases that fuel global warming!!!
Trees lower air temperatures making Urban Areas more inhabitable for humans and wildlife!!!

In Scotland the wind has been up to 100mph and because of that 2 people have died and lods of trres have fallen but I’m not sure about the exact number. Trees help us for paper, wood, furniture and oxygen. The impact is bad for us because if trees keep falling the oxygen will run out it’s also bad for the animals and the insects that live there.

Lots of trees fell down during storm Ali but I don’t have an exact number, but I know this has made numbers of trees to fall over causing a lot of damage. This affects the planet because trees give us oxygen to breath and they breath in carbon dioxide so this can cause to climate change, also creatures maybe living in the tree and can lose their homes!
Storm Ali’s 100mph winds led to cancellations of trains, planes motorways shutting down and cruise ships being cast adrift. At least 75 planes were grounded at Dublin airport and ten other diverted. Some cities like Amsterdam ,Berlin,Portland,Cape town and Helsinki are some of the most greenest cities in the world. Trees lower air temperatures making urban areas more inhabitable for humans and wildlife.

I have only found 5 trees that have fell down in storm Ali
Last month Storm Ali caused a lot of chaos as many trees fell on cars and roads all over Scotland. Winds soared up to 100mph causing damage to buildings and blocking roads, due to these falling trees there has also been some deaths.flights and trains have also been cancelled as a result of storm Ali.some trees I’m aware of are one in my back garden,my dads guesthouse and I saw one blocking the road in Dennistoun. As far as I’m aware there isn’t an exact number of fallen trees as of yet and the trees that fell were very old,dry and soggy due to climate changes. The impact trees have on our environment is significant as trees are like the lung of the planet. They breathe in carbon dioxide and breathe out oxygen.Addittionally, they provide habitat for birds and other wildlife.Trees trap CO2 from the atmosphere and make carbohydrates that are used for plant growth.
I went to Maxwell Park and found about 20 trees that fell. This destroyed animals like squirrels and birds homes. You should plant trees as they are the reason why we breath and they inhale our carbon dioxide. Top 10 Greenest Cities/Countries In The World:

Why plant trees in urban areas?
Planting trees is a good thing to do because……
1. It adds more oxygen in the area and less carbon dioxide.
2. It adds more nature to the area.
3. When the bees come they pollen the plants.
4. Adds more greenry.
5. Creates more natural foods like ( apples, pairs, bananas, and more).
6. Adds the limitations for building ( wood).
7. Improve a person’s life style ( oxygen, food, nature).
8. We produce paper from plants.

Try work what this means. 🙂
I had seen 4 trees that had fallen in my area and I think it would impact the environment because it might block the road or damage a wall or store. When the trees fell that could’ve been a squirrels home or a bee hive could have been hanging on it. It is good to plant trees in urban areas because trees give oxygen and a lot of people are in urban areas and people need oxygen to live. Here are some green cities: Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Vancouver, London and Stockholm.
2. I had seen alder trees in my area, later trees add fertility to the soil which it is in and I had also seen some apple trees, apple trees give us apples and apples are good for us

Hi maidah
Hi Miss Cohen ,I am writing my homework.
1. During Storm Ali many trees fell and I saw 2 trees had fallen in my local area. The impact this will have is when the trees had fallen it injured and killed people. It also crushed cars and some houses and many were out of electricity. Reasons why you should plant trees:combat climate change, prevent flooding, support agriculture, create wood fuel, improve health and well being ,encourage wildlife and build resilience. The green cities that plant trees are:Amsterdam,Copenhagen,San Francisco,Bristol and Stockholm.
2. The different trees I found out about are:Oak trees =North America,so they are not native.
Chestnut tree =Asia,again not native.
Blossom trees=Japanese,also not native.
The benefits of having trees are that they give us oxygen and they reduce the amount of storm water runoff which will stop Erosion and Pollution in our water. They also reduce the effects of flooding and species of wildlife depend on trees. As well, trees provide food, homes for us and homes birds and mammals. The disadvantages are that if they fall they might cut power lines or more importantly hurt someone. However, all plants are good for the environment.
