The Joy and Benefits of Outdoor Play

At Woodlands, we believe that the outdoors is one of the best places for young children to learn and thrive. Whether they’re splashing in puddles, digging in the mud, or discovering bugs in the garden, outdoor play is full of rich learning experiences.

Here are just a few of the wonderful benefits outdoor play brings to young children:

  • Healthy Bodies: Running, climbing, balancing, and jumping help children build strong muscles, improve coordination, and stay active.
  • Confident Explorers: Being outside encourages curiosity and independence as children explore the world around them.
  • Social Skills: Outdoor play often involves teamwork, sharing, and problem-solving with friends, helping children learn how to get along with others.
  • Emotional Wellbeing: Nature has a calming effect. Outdoor play can reduce stress and help children feel happy and relaxed.
  • Creative Thinking: Open-ended outdoor spaces inspire imaginative play—sticks become magic wands, leaves become treasure!
  • Learning Through Nature: Children learn about seasons, weather, plants, and animals just by being outside and noticing what’s around them.

We ensure our outdoor spaces are safe, engaging, and full of opportunities for children to learn through play, exploration, and adventure. All our areas and playrooms have direct access to outdoors. Children also have opportunities to explore the secret garden on a weekly basis.
