ECO NEWS
After a lot of hard work and dedication by staff, parents and pupils, we are delighted to have received our Eco flag this year.
WHAT ARE OUR ECO AIMS?
Our main aim is to look after our environment. We have lots of opportunities to practise this within our surrounding grounds. Through our Eco activities, the children learn to care for the nursery and its grounds.
The Eco topics we have chosen are:
- Litter and recycling – Our Aim is to raise awareness of litter and and keep the grounds litter free and to recycle as much as possible.
- Food and the environment – Our Aim is to understand how food is produced and to continue to develop our garden area, working with the gardening group, to plant, harvest and cook the produce.
- Biodiversity – Our Aim is to encourage wildlife in our grounds.
HOW WE WORK
The children take it in turns to be part of the Eco committee and we meet weekly to plan our activities. These activities arise from the Eco topic and so we carried out litter picks, made bird cakes and fed the birds, followed by joining the RSPB birdwatch. We develop the raised beds and sow vegetables from seed, grow soft fruit and look after the apple trees. All our food is harvested and we eat it for snack or to sell to families as a mini enterprise initiative as part of Developing the Young Workforce.
Families are involved in our Eco activities and we have additional support from the community;
- Sustainable cupar
- Zero waste
- Elmwood College
- Cupar in bloom
We also have a permanent clothes bank as part of the Rag Bag textile collection scheme. Bags can be found on the Eco table in the foyer and the Centre is paid for every kilogram collected.
ARE YOU INTERESTED?
The Eco focus changes from term to term but that doesn’t mean the work around the previous topics stops. The birds still need to be fed, the raised beds weeded, the litter picked and the recycling monitored. If you would like to lend a hand, if you would like to be involved or if you have a special interest … please let us know.
