Monday and Tuesday with Mrs Meiklem

We enjoyed working collaboratively to create our own hip hop dances in groups for PE.

We also learned about the ‘three Js- jute, jam and journalism’ in topic. We then made our very own comic strips inspired by Dundee’s famous Beano magazine!

On Tuesday we enjoyed welcoming our grown ups for our Shared Learning Event. It was so nice to have you all in our classroom.

We all wrote imaginative stories and self- assessed our work after editing and self- correcting.
We worked with spelling partners on common words.
It was Internet Safety Week and on Tuesday we learned how to make sure we stay safe online. We created posters to teach others about the dangers online.

This week we had fun adding to our group dance in PE. We are dancing to Jai Ho and we are adding lots of Indian Bangra music dance moves. We loved watching it back on the iPad after filming ourselves.
In numeracy we are all working on subtraction at our own levels. We are becoming more independent and selecting appropriate materials and mental strategies. The p3s were working with double digit numbers within 100 and learning how to round numbers or use a ‘split strategy’ for subtraction. The P2s are working hard to use a number line to solve subtraction problems within 20.
In literacy we have been practising the skill of note taking. We are also learning how to have a class debate. This week we worked to debate whether we should eat more insects to help the environment, using our notes to help answer questions.
In French we learned how to talk about the weather.
For topic we were learning about famous Dundonian inventors and how their inventions changed people’s lives. We also created a class museum last week which was very interesting. Pictures attached!
We used boomwhackers in music this week.
We look forward to seeing some of you at our Shared learning event on Tuesday the 10th of February.

Monday to Wednesday with Mrs Meiklem

This week we have been learning about the Tay Whale and talking about the whaling industry in Dundee at that time in history. We took notes and then had a class discussion about  whether whaling should be illegal in all places in the world. We were able to give good reasons for our opinions and listen to others respectfully.

We created our own whale art work using cold colours and poster paints. We created a class art gallery and gave each other peer feedback.

We wrote newspaper articles about the whale.

In PE we are creating a group Bollywood group dance. We filmed ourselves and watched it back on the smart board in the classroom.

We also made a classroom museum to look at old artefacts and discussed how we can see if they are a reliable source of information from the past.

In numeracy we are working on subtraction. P2s within 20 and p3s within 100. We focussed taking away multiples of 10.

Another lovely week together this week! Also a warm welcome to Miss Drummond  who is doing her teacher training placement with us for the next few weeks.
This week we have enjoyed learning more about the Dundee Jute Mills in our topic. We also learned about the old ferry to Dundee and created some wonderful wax resist art work, inspired by famous artist James Rizzi. We are enjoying responding to the children’s’ questions and interests.
In numeracy we are continuing to work on different subtraction strategies at our own level.
In PE we were creating dances with a partner to pop music. We talked about how the music made us feel and gave each other feedback on our performances.

We loved hearing everyone’s Scots Poems  this week. What a super effort from everyone. The class were so encouraging to one another and celebrated each other’s successes with claps and high fives!
In writing we created our own Scots Poems and had fun reading them out.

We were learning about the old ferry from Newport to Dundee. We hope you like our art work.

Next week we are going to create our own class museum with old artefacts that are linked to our community and Dundee. Please look out for a note about this.

It has been so nice getting back together this week and hearing everyone’s news.

We are looking at shapes, travelling, jumps, turns and learning to count the beat. We are creating dances on our own and in pairs and giving each other verbal feedback.

We have all enjoyed Skills Academy this week.  The groups we have signed up for are animation, Lego, printing and games.

For homework this week we will be reading and choosing a Scottish Poem to learn. Look out for this in the homework folders.

Miss Drummond is a student teacher who will be joining us after the holidays and she came in to meet us all on Tuesday which was lovely.

We wrote fabulous imaginative stories about magic portals and jewel thieves! We also worked cooperatively using Kapla and small loose parts to build what Newport needs next linked to our topic.
