Monday to Wednesday with Mrs Meiklem

This week we had fun exploring the animation app ‘Scratch Junior’. We were able add characters, backgrounds and make our characters move and speak. We gave each other feedback when watching them together. We all really enjoyed this and we plan to do more.
In numeracy we were rounding and estimating.
In literacy we worked with a partner to make a poster about Julia Donaldson. We then did a paired talk to the class, using our poster as an aid. We all put in lots of effort.
We assessed our spelling of common words this week and this will allow us to make personal spelling lists to see which words we still need to work on. Please continue practising at home also.
We had a lovely sunny day for Loose Parts Play with the p1 class. We also liked bench ball this week in PE.

Friday 19th September 2025

This week we have continued with learning football skills. We were using lots of fun games to practice, dribbling, passing and other footwork skills. Our favourite game is space invaders. In outdoor learning we rotated groups so one group looked and birds and nature, another looked at trees and the third did natural story builders. In Health and Wellbeing we discussed the difference between a big deal and a little deal. We also spoke about the different responses we can have in these situations. We also started Committees this week. Don’t forget to ask me about my Committee. in Art we created colourful Christmas art in preparation for Christmas card printing.

Wednesday 17th September 2025

Monday to Wednesday with Mrs Meiklem

This week we were learning about a growth mindset and also the learning pit. We worked together in groups to create our own mini plays showing what to do to get out of the learning pit. We had lots of fun and then used our ICT skills to film them. Finally we watched them all on the smartboard like a cinema and gave each other feedback.

In numeracy we are working on estimation and rounding. P2s have been using number lines to see if a number is closer to 0,10 or 20. P3s are rounding to the nearest 10 and 100. We are all learning how to count a collection of objects systematically in groups of 2, 5 and 10.

In spelling we have been working on new spelling rules. P2s are learning ‘ll’ and P3s are learning ‘ay’. We have been doing dictations on the whiteboards and making up our own silly sentences.

Our book of the week was ‘The Cook and the King’ by Julia Donaldson. We practised our grammar and phonics through shared texts and wrote descriptions of the king. P2s were trying to use the connective ‘and’. P3s were using adjectives and a variety of conjunctions. Some were trying similes.

We look forward to seeing some of you at the School Fayre on Saturday.

Friday 12th September 2025

This week we have started learning  football skills in PE we learnt to say ‘no to the toe’ to make sure we were using the correct part of our foot to dribble. We worked on lots of touches and keeping the ball under our control. we played What’s The Time Mr. Woolf, Traffic Lights and Space Invaders but all with a football twist. For outdoor learning we have split into three groups one group did natural story builders, one focused on leaves and trees and another on birds. we will rotate these groups for the next three weeks until we have covered the three different activities. In Literacy we have been working on writing good sentences. we have been thinking about capital letters, spacing, full stops and making sure they make sense. In Maths we have been exploring 3D shape this week and in Health an wellbeing we have been learning about positive affirmations. In Science we created our own skeleton flip books and have been exploring facts about our skeletons, joints and muscles.

Wednesday the 10th of September 2025

Hello 👋 families,

We have enjoyed our Author Study of Julia Donaldson this week. Our main book was ‘The Smeds and the Smoos’. Our character descriptions were fabulous and we also used the iPads to airdrop our wonderful pictures from the ‘Sketch’ App. We liked giving each other feedback by sharing good examples on the smartboard.

In reading we have been working on fluency and expression. We are working with a range of reading partners and practising our key vocabulary together.
For spelling we have continued to practise common words. Please keep this going at home throughout the year. Next week we shall have a short assessment on these words.

In numeracy we have been looking at place value within 100 for our P2s and 1000 for our P3s. We have been working in groups to order numbers and to create the highest and lowest numbers with digit cards.

We joined P1 again for Loose Parts and demonstrated our School Values well.

This week we have also been talking about the importance of persevering and a growth  mindset. We shared the story ‘Giraffes Can’t Dance’ and have been nominating people in the class who represent our Learner Characteristics.

 

Friday 5th September 2025

This week we have enjoyed working on different skills in PE again. We took part in hockey, bowling, throwing and catching with scoops, ring toss and tennis. We also had fun playing games and taking turns with the parachute.

 

In outdoor learning we discussed lots of different feelings and what facial expressions they miht have. We created different emotion faces using natural materials. We had feelings such as surprised, worried, excited, calm…

 

In maths we have been exploring 2D shapes, counting sides and corners. We have also been exploring chance and probability.

 

In Health and Wellbeing we have been discussing growth mindset and he power of ‘yet’ through the story The Magical Yet.

 

Finally, in science we have started learning about body systems and cells. We started this topic off by learning about the human skeleton. We thought about what it does how it move and what it protects. We managed to build life size skeletons on the floor.

Wednesday 3rd September 2025

Monday to Wednesday with Mrs Meiklem

We are really enjoying our author study of Julia Donaldson books. We are sharing these texts and finding phonics sounds, looking at spelling and grammar rules and also discussing character and plot. We are writing descriptions of our favourite characters in our big writing lessons. You will be able to see our wonderful work on the wall.
In handwriting this week we have been practising letters with tails. We are all working on common words in spelling, working at our own level.

In music we are continuing to learn different body percussion to a range of songs. For PE we are playing playground games to improve fitness and working on ball games. We have had fun with parachute games too.

Homework will go out this Wednesday and is always returned on a Monday.

 

Friday29th August

This week in PE we took part in different stations where we practiced our throwing, catching, balancing and jumping skills. In outdoor learning we had lots of fun creating mazes for our friends to follow with chalk on the playground. we used our creativity, communication, problem solving and team building skills. In health and Wellbeing we have learnt about what we need to be ready to learn, the importance of sleep and a good bed time routine. we loved creating our sleep superheroes. We have started exploring 2D shapes in maths and some of us went on a shape hunt and used natural materials to create shapes. the others will do it next week. We learned how to draw self-portraits focusing on line, shape and colour. 

Friday 22nd August

The children have had a lovely week welcoming everyone back and getting to know their new teachers. This week we have played lots of getting to know you games and enjoyed exploring our new classroom. In PE we played at different stations working on a vide variety of skills such as skipping, throwing and catching, balancing… In outdoor learning we explored the school grounds and did a colour hunt to find things that matched our chosen colours. In Health and wellbeing we have discussed how we want our classroom to feel, our class charter. in art we started self portraits to make our space and to celebrate our classroom community.

Wednesday with Mrs Meiklem

What a lovely first day today! It was so nice to see everyone and share our holiday news.

We enjoyed playing class bingo and started to create our new class charter.

We liked exploring the classroom with our friends and playing outside together.

We were practising letters that start like a ‘c’ for handwriting heroes and we shared some books from the class library. At the end of the day we played spelling sparkle to practise our common words.
