Newport Nursery week of the 23.6.25

Hello everyone, we hope you  all have had a great week! Here is a look at what we have been up to in nursery…..

This week learning is… creativity, motor skills, team work, communication, balancing skills, hand/eye coordination, numeracy, literacy, self confidence, exploring, predicting, being curious, sharing, self-esteem, technology, outdoor learning and problem solving.

Even though the weather has been not so great this week, the children are still exploring and developing their learning through their play. Outside the children explored the turf tray after some of children were discussing  their holidays. With a  discussion about  the beach and what they could find on a beach they worked together to gather resources to create their own beach. The children  showed respect the resources, placing these nicely into the sand and water.

“We need animals lots of sea creatures”

“I found a baby octopus and that’s a big one.”

The children were discussing different animals and sizes.

“I’ve seen a jellyfish and orcas but I can’t remember where”.

“I’ve seen a lot of dolphins here but never when I’ve been to Spain.”

This  led to talking about what they would wear in hot countries and how to travel.

“We need to wear sun cream and sun hats when it’s hot”.

“I’ve been on a aeroplane to go to lots of places. Even Portugal and Spain.”

Another peer then said

“I got a boat before”.

Observing the children they were discussing what would happen if you would drown.

“You would need the fire engine, ambulance and even the coast guard.”

They also discussed personal experiences and different holidays they have been on .whilst they  played with a range of sea life animals..

Our last forest session for this year was held on Tuesday. Some children explored the large stones around the area, recognising  and recalling the different shapes that they were similar too.

“That’s a triangle, and that’s a square”

While others explored the charcoal and was using it to mark make.. A group of children demonstrated their skills to use the rope swing, twisting and spinning around. Others enjoyed role play sharing their imaginative ideas and cooperation to deepen the play. Afterwards a hot snack and a drink, a group went on a safari through the long grass, recalling the words of going on a bear hunt. They used their skills to climb up and down steep banks sharing their knowledge of the nature around them.

The children enjoyed developing their skills to explore and investigate using their senses. They explored the bouncing putty using skills to roll, mould the dough into shapes, then try to bounce the putty into the pot. They found that by kneading the dough well made the putty bounce faster and higher. Some  children made cloud foam dough, supporting skills to mix, knead the dough and through using their senses discussed the texture, smell of the mixture, and what happens if they add more cornflour or conditioner.

Throughout the week we have observed so much  child initiated learning  occurring throughout the nursery. We’ve observed some children using the blocks to create very detailed buildings to some developing their shape recognition and matching skills when tidying up the blocks.

Others were seen developing their mark making skills using sand instead of paper, some developing their early reading skills to match names whilst helping to prepare a game for the adult. while some have revisited previous learning when discovering lots of different insects and bugs. They found a green shelled woodlouse, which they further extend the interest to learn more about this creature called a Rose chafer. A group played a game of Pokémon card hunt, demonstrating skills to search, listening to advice and using directional language, following the rules of the game and working well with others to problem solve how to reach the card that had blown out of the garden setting.. Outside one child enjoyed sharing his knowledge of the clouds and how the rain comes down, then strops, then goes slow or fast demonstrating using the sand falling onto the truck..

Our last play on pedals session for the bikers today focused on gliding and judging distance through a game called King or Queen of the castle. We also played Pirate treasure that supported skills to steer and be observant, but also early reading skills in recognition of their name and use counting,  and add and subtraction skills. All the children followed the rules giving support to others throughout the game to finish. They also recognised others achievements after judging in the distance challenge when we had the 2 winners  to become a king and queen of the castle game. Today we had 2 volunteers to support the adult, helping and preparing the area with the adult. Todays last session for the balancers ran on the same has yesterday with Leo becoming the King and Sehrish the queen of the castle for gliding the furthest. We also participated in the pirate treasure with Captain Innes being the first to find all his tokens. We finish off playing what’s the time Mr wolf focusing on using their brakes. Also can i say a very big thank you to all the parents that supported their children through remembering to bring their helmets and bikes over the last few weeks, it was much appreciated.
