Learning Overview for Primary 5

Literacy

WRITING: We will be working on creating texts to share information. Activities will include creating newspaper reports, evacuation instructions and report writing using notes we have made to support us. We will also be learning how to clearly structure our informational writing to attract the reader’s attention.

 

SPELLING: We will be looking at prefixes, suffixes, spelling rules and syllables within words to improve accuracy.

 

READING: We are building on our ability to apply a range of reading skills and strategies to read and understand texts such as sequencing, comparing, contrasting and making judgements.

 

LISTENING & TALKING: We will be focusing on opportunities to develop speaking to an audience and gaining confidence to do this. Some of the activities will include creating group projects and presenting our research to others.

Numeracy and Mathematics

NUMERACY: Our work will focus on two topics Fractions, Percentages and Decimals and money.

 

Fraction work will include work on creating, comparing and ordering commonly used fractions, making connections between fractions and decimals as well as learning about numerator and denominator for fractions.

 

Money work will focus on how to budget effectively to pay for expenses and create savings. We will also create financial plans, accessing product prices from a range of sources.

 

MATHEMATICS: We will be covering 3 topics this term: Information handling, measurement and the impact of mathematics.

 

Information handling work will focus on generating and analysing visual data such as graphs and charts.

 

Measurement work will focus on developing accuracy in choosing an appropriate unit of measurement and the relationships between standard units. E.g. 1kg=1000g.

 

We will research how maths is used in everyday life e.g. shopping, timetables. We will also find out about the discoveries of famous mathematicians and explore the involvement of maths in the world of work.

 Health and Wellbeing

P.E: We are experimenting with movement & objects by varying weight and direction of strike with increased hand/eye or foot/eye coordination. This will be carried out through activities such as badminton and hockey.

 

Health:

We will be talking about Relationships, Sexual Health and Parenthood using the RSHP resources from https://rshp.scot/second-level/ . We will be beginning second level, identifying the changes we go through during puberty, how to make positive friendships and equality.

 

Our Topic

 

Natural disasters: We will be researching the disasters that occur naturally on our planet. We will discover how these events occur and what impact they have on living things and the environment. We will undertake a range of cross curricular activities to contextualise our learning.
