Quadcopter Challenge - Part 2

On Monday 3rd November 2025, the Quadcopter Regional Final had finally arrived. Both team KDAS and team SAS had been preparing their presentations and practising their flying for months. They were ready to go!

A panel of judges arrived at Kirkcaldy High School, shortly followed by the KHS teams, and various teams from schools across Fife and the Lothians. After a quick introduction from Raytheon, teams began their presentations. It was clear that both KHS teams had listened to the STEM ambassador they had invited in week before, and made all the changes he had suggested. The judges were extremely impressed with the presentation skills. One judge commented on how professional the KDAS presentation looked. One judge commented on how good the SAS team’s rapport with each other was.

After the presentations came the visual inspections. Both teams handled the questions really well, and the judges commented on this as well.

Quadcopter Challenge - Part 2The final round was the flying. Unfortunately, KDAS couldn’t generate enough lift to get their quadcopter off the ground. They took the very educated decision to zip round the course on the ground and get as many points as they could that way. The judges were impressed with their time, and thought it couldn’t be beaten… until… team SAS arrived for their flying, and absolutely smashed it. The judges were actually in disbelief at how well SAS flew. SAS were awarded bonus points for their speed.

Final scores came around. Only one team from Fife could progress to the next round…. Congratulations to team SAS, who won the Fife Regional Final! Both teams did their school proud. Miss Barclay was thoroughly impressed with their efforts and conduct throughout the day.

Team KDAS have taken their quadcopter home to enjoy some social flying time. For team SAS, it’s only going to get more intense as they start practising for the National Final, which is in three weeks! Watch this space for an update after the final chapter…
