Learning Journeys at KHS

At Kirkcaldy High School, we believe that learning is most powerful when it’s a shared experience between young people, their teachers, and their families. When parents and carers take an active interest in what their young person is learning, it helps build confidence, motivation, and a deeper understanding of the world around them. We also know that when young people move into secondary school, they can sometimes be less forthcoming about what they’re learning day to day.

To support this partnership, we’ve organised our Broad General Education (BGE) curriculum into clear, structured Learning Programmes, each lasting approximately 8 weeks. These programmes provide a consistent and coherent approach across all curricular areas, making it easier for families to stay informed and engaged.

By knowing what your young person is learning in each block, you can have meaningful conversations at home, encourage curiosity, and help reinforce key skills and concepts. Whether it’s discussing a topic from Social Subjects, exploring ideas from Science, or supporting creativity in Expressive Arts, your involvement makes a real difference. Even small chats can make a big difference in supporting their progress and helping them make informed choices moving forward.

Below, you’ll find an overview of the 8-week Learning Programmes for S1 for each curricular area. We encourage you to explore them and use this insight to support your young person’s progress and wellbeing.

S1 Dates

  • Learning Programme 1: 20th Aug to 10th Oct
  • Learning Programme 2: 27th Oct to 19th Dec
  • Learning Programme 3: 5th Jan to 27th Feb
  • Learning Programme 4: 2nd Mar to 8th May

For subjects such as Design, Engineering & Technology, Science, and PE, due to limited facilities and resources, young people will follow a rota system. This means they won’t all be completing the same learning at the same time. For all other subjects, they will follow the Learning Programme schedule outlined above.

Thank you for taking an active interest in your young person’s curriculum. Your support plays a vital role in helping them feel confident and engaged in their learning journey.
