Bringing Scottish Myth to Life Through Stop-Animation

We’re delighted to share a fantastic stop-animation video created by three of our S3 Learning Ambassadors as part of our ongoing partnership with Helsinge Gymnasium in Finland.

Earlier this year, pupils in Finland asked to learn more about traditional Scottish myths and legends. Rising to the challenge with creativity, commitment, and real skill, our Learning Ambassadors produced a full retelling of The Kelpies — from first concept to final edit.

Over the past few weeks, Leia, Charlotte, and Jackson have worked tirelessly to bring this story to life. Every aspect of the animation was created by the pupils themselves, using only their iPads and a new stop-animation app. This included:

  • All illustrations hand-drawn by the team
  • A script written entirely by the pupils
  • Voiceover recorded and edited independently
  • Background music performed by The Haggis Hoppers, our very own KHS pupil-led ceilidh band

This project has been a genuine learning journey. Alongside deepening their understanding of Scottish folklore, the team developed an impressive range of digital skills, including storyboarding, sequencing, animation timing, and visual design. They also demonstrated real maturity in considering how best to communicate Scottish culture to an international audience.

As a result of this experience, the pupils now have the confidence and expertise to explain the stop-animation process to staff who may be interested in using this technique within their own subjects.

Their teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving throughout the project have been exceptional, showcasing exactly the leadership, resilience, and imagination we strive to nurture in our young people.

The finished video will be shared with Helsinge Gymnasium this week, and we hope you enjoy watching it as much as the pupils enjoyed making it.

A huge thank you to all staff who supported this project — your encouragement makes opportunities like this possible.
