Our learners had the opportunity to visit the Muirfield Training Centre and learn all about the Building Services Modern Apprenticeships offered by Fife Council. Although it was a fun-filled day, there was also plenty of serious learning taking place.

Did you know that Building Services employs over 900 people, making it the second largest employer in Scotland, and provides a 24/7, year-round service to customers across Fife? Their work ranges from the smallest of repairs—such as renewing a tap washer—to major capital projects worth hundreds of thousands of pounds.

A typical apprenticeship takes four years to complete. This includes both college and site-based training, working towards an SVQ Level 3 qualification. Their award-winning programme gives young people practical training in their chosen trade alongside studying for a recognised qualification.

There is a wide variety of trades for young people aged 16–24 who live in Fife to apply for, including joinery, electrical work, fabricating and welding, gas technology, stonemasonry, HGV mechanics, painting, glazing, and sign making—among many others. As employees of Fife Council, apprentices are well supported, kept at the cutting edge of their professions, and regularly updated with the latest methods and ideas. Great emphasis is placed on employee training as well as continuous professional and personal development.

The recruitment process begins in late January/February, and we will hold further sessions in school for those interested in applying. These tasks are also used in the skills test during the application process.
