At Kirkcaldy High School, our S2 pupils recently took part in an inspiring and creative two-day learning experience called “Sea Story”, where they explored the urgent issue of ocean pollution and the importance of protecting our marine ecosystems.
🧠 Learning Through Stories and Science
The “Sea Story” unit was designed to develop key meta-skills including self-management, social intelligence, and innovation.
Pupils learned about how human activities are impacting the ocean, and why taking action now is crucial. They worked collaboratively to research and share stories that would inspire others to care about our planet’s blue heart.
🐠 Creative and Critical Thinking
Pupils took part in a range of imaginative tasks:
- “Any Fin Will Do” challenged them to design their own fish adapted to marine environments.
- They created **tessellation fish art** pieces and wrote personal pledges to reduce their plastic use—contributing to a shared mural promoting ocean awareness.
- Through the “Myths of the Ocean” session, groups retold legendary stories such as Atlantis and the Kraken, using props made from recycled materials.
One student pledge read: “I pledge to reuse bottles and use metal straws instead of plastic.” Another wrote, “Our planet will end by 2141 if we don’t stop using single-use plastics!” – a powerful reminder of the stakes.
🎬 Film Trailer Fun
To wrap up, pupils, brainstormed, scripted, and presented film trailers designed to raise awareness about ocean threats. Using a mix of PowerPoint, props, drawings, and digital tools, they pitched their stories to classmates—receiving peer feedback to reflect and improve their presentations.
The Sea Story days were a fantastic success—combining science, storytelling, creativity, and environmental education. We are so proud of our pupils for their thoughtful work and passionate advocacy. 🌍💙
Let’s all take inspiration from their pledges and work together to protect our oceans for future generations.
