A group of 6 S5/6 young people have just completed a week’s course learning about sustainability. The course was very good as we all had so much fun and was interesting. We developed team-building skills and skills for life through all the activities.
One day we went to a walled garden where we picked peppers and carrots and learned about planting vegetables. We also picked apples from their trees.
On Monday and Tuesday afternoons, we had a chance to go cycling around Beveridge Park. We learned where is appropriate to cycle. There was a chance to do bike maintenance and two of us are getting free bikes from the course! We spent time walking around Beveridge Park during the week and learning about the benefits of exercise to mental health. We took photographs as we walked.
We learned about energy usage in a workshop and how much energy different appliances in the home cost. In addition, we learned about jobs that are green and that every job could be more sustainable. Another activity we took part in was cooking. We learned how to make veggie pasta bake and apple crumble which was tasty!
On the last afternoon we had a celebration of the week where we all received a certificate. We also planted a pear tree and toasted marshmallows over the fire in Ravenscraig Walled Garden. This was a great end to the week.
