JFS Curriculum

Our curriculum is based on the Curriculum for Excellence, including the ASN Milestones, where appropriate.

The JFS Curriculum Framework shows clear progression from Nursery, through Primary to Secondary BGE and SQA programmes. It also includes our Sensory Curriculum, Structured Play and Outdoor Learning frameworks. Clear pathways and outcomes lead to positive destinations for our pupils when they transition from John Fergus School to adult services.

Here is our JFS Curriculum Framework:

Each learner has an individualised Personal Learning Profile (PLP) where targets are set annually in consultation with parents and all relevant professionals and termly with parents. IndividualisedĀ  targets are set in Literacy, Numeracy & Maths, Health & Wellbeing and Skills for Learning, Life and Work, for each young person. All other areas of the curriculum are planned for and assessed within our Theme and Topic. Some learners also have a Child’s Plan, as appropriate.

Our children and young people are made aware of the wider world through Global Citizenship, Eco Schools, Enterprise and IDL. They develop and contribute to school events, such as Daffodil Tea; an annual thank you to our partners, Christmas concert and Summer Fayre and take part in charity appeals for Red Nose Day, Children in Need and Rotary Shoe Box Appeal.

School is also well supported by local groups, particularly Balbirnie Golf Club, local Masonic Lodges, the CISWO Club, all who are regular fundraising contributors and support any school activities they can. Their support and attendance at school events and activities help enhance pupils learning even further and imbed John Fergus at the centre of the community.

The main framework is supported by well trained staff providing a caring and supportive environment in school. Their existing experience and knowledge combined with new learning, enable staff to deliver the curriculum in a variety of settings. The effectiveness of support given isĀ  regularly reviewed and shared with parents at annual reviews, parent evenings and annual review meetings. We will ensure the highest possible levels of professionalism in staff by meeting professional learning needs.
