Welcome to Primary 1!
Our main feeder nursery is Treetops Family Nurture Centre, Inverkeithing.
We work closely in partnership with them and other local nurseries to develop an efficient transition from nursery into Primary one.

Transitions in school – moving up to new year groups
We work hard to support children in their transition as they move from class to class and stage to stage through the school.
We do this in a variety of ways:
In Term 4, before the summer holidays:
- through transition work in class with their existing teacher
- visiting their new classroom, cloakroom and pod area (and playground if applicable)
- having a ‘meet the teacher’ session with their new teacher in their new classroom with their new classmates
- holding review meetings for identified children with additional support needs and their families to discuss and plan together
- all children receive symbolised/ pictorial ‘getting to know me’ letters from their new class teacher
- shared transition notes between your child’s existing teacher and their new teacher
In Term 1, after the summer holidays:
- reviewing transition information from your child’s previous teacher
- ‘getting to know you’ activities with your child’s new teacher
- staff planning opportunities to support the continuity of learning and planning for stage group experiences
Class organisation at IPS
Fife Council allocates teachers based on the total number of children in the school. The Headteacher then organises classes taking
account of:
- the number of teachers
- national guidelines on class size.
Our classes are organised with the following national guidance in mind: maximum single
class sizes of:
- 33 children in P4-7
- 30 children in P2 and P3.
- 25 children in P1.
- The maximum composite class size is 25. (The minimum number of children of any stage is 4).
Our school is a mixture of classes with single stage group (straight classes) and mixed stage groups (composite classes).
We use guidance from the Fife Council to allocate children to classes fairly and consistently.
We use age to select a group of children in a composite class.
In exceptional circumstances, the Headteacher takes account of diagnosed medical or additional support needs of the children when creating classes. If this is applicable to your child staff will contact you directly to discuss arrangements.
You can read more about composite classes through the leaflet below:
There is also helpful research into composite classes that can be found by CLICKING HERE.
We make sure children in all classes have the right opportunities for learning, so they reach their full potential.
Moving on to High School!
P7 Children from Inverkeithing Primary transfer to our catchment high school, Inverkeithing High School.
We are fortunate that we currently share a campus with both Inverkeithing High and Treetop Nurture Centre. This supports our close working relationship and good transition links.
Children have opportunities during their time at Inverkeithing Primary to have time at High School. Examples of this are swimming in the pool, cooking in the Home Economics Department, sports on the sports grounds as well as transition visits that take place annually in June.
