Language

Within an educational setting, staff must:

  • encourage the use of supportive language
  • use pupil’s preferred pronouns and encourage the use of gender neutral language
  • use vocabulary that is accessible to all and give definitions when necessary.

This responsibility also falls upon pupils and families who should try as much as they can to support one another and use appropriate language.

Terminology Language is constantly evolving and so there is not one correct set of terminology for people from different sub-groups of the protected characteristics. Best practice is to ask individuals which terms they would like used to refer to them and to any groups of which they are a part.
