P6

Primary 6 have been working hard since starting back in August and we cannot believe that we are halfway through term 1 already!

LITERACY

We are off to a flying start with our class novel – Holes, by Louis Sachar! We have already completed a few literacy activities based on what we have read so far. These include prediction, carrying out a character investigation and making social media profiles for characters. We all look forward to reading our novel daily and are always eager to take turns of reading excerpts aloud to the class.

We carry out grammar and spelling activities every week, with new spelling words being given out on a Monday. We practise writing them at various times over the course of the week so that we are familiar with them for our spelling test on Friday! Term 1 grammar lessons focus on verb tenses, homophones and antonyms. Many of us enjoy using the writing area in the class to either practise handwriting or carry out activities that reinforce learning that has already taken place.

NUMERACY

We have started off the year by carrying out some revision, recapping on place value with 5-digit numbers to ensure understanding. It is important that we understand that the value of each digit in a number is multiplied by the value of the place. As we move on to 6 and 7-digit numbers, we will engage in practical activities using concrete materials and pictorial representations as well as formal written methods.

We will then continue to focus on these numbers and using similar materials and learning approaches, carry out calculations using the four operations – addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Measure (length) and 3D shape will be our maths topics for this term and some of this work will link in well with themes from our class novel and outdoor learning.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

Mrs Lister takes us for PE on a Wednesday and Thursday and this term we are learning how to play as part of a team in netball. We will be developing different passing techniques, learning about footwork rules and how to mark as well as learning the importance of using space during a game.

In class we are learning about feelings and emotions, and we each completed a wheel to display our individual experiences. Our representations were amazing, with some of us choosing to either draw a picture, demonstrate this through colour or create an abstract pattern.

We made our class charter at the start of term after discussing the Rights of the Child and voted to make a rainbow from all our handprints. The charter shows our school values and highlights five articles that we feel are important.

We have a Recognition Board in class which has a focus that changes weekly. So far this has included: displaying good manners, working quietly and being respectful. Throughout each day, recognition is given to children who are displaying the focus and our aim is to have everyone’s name on the board by the end of the day. We then start afresh the next morning.

Friday is class certificate day and this always brings great excitement! A Star Writer and Pupil of the Week are chosen and a Certificate of Recognition is given to someone whose name has been on the class Recognition Board every day that week. They get a bonus of choosing something from the treasure chest! Photographs of certificate winners are posted on individual Seesaw pages each week.

Below are a few photos of areas in our classroom and displays of our work so far. Please access our Seesaw posts to keep updated with what we are learning each week in class.

Here’s to a fabulous term of learning Primary 6!

Our personalised ‘sneakers’ display that ties in with our novel and demonstrates that although we are all different, we can walk our learning journey together.

Our reading corner and writing area where we like to relax with a book or carry out activities that can help us to improve our writing skills.
