P2

This term in Primary 2 we are learning about the wonderful world of Dr Seuss! We will be reading lots of Dr Seuss books and this will provide an exciting context for lots of our learning. Our Class Mascot is called Rainbow Bear, and he is inspired by the lovely book Oh, The Places You’ll Go by Dr Seuss. This is Mrs Chapman’s favourite children’s book, and we also used it to help us create our class charter. Rainbow Bear reminds us to make good choices and show the school values in class.

In Literacy this term we will be focusing on embedding our knowledge of our sounds and becoming more confident when using our sounds to read simple words and sentences. We are learning about sentence structure and sounding out to become independent writers. We will also be focusing on finger strengthening, pencil control and letter formation to ensure we are superstar writers! Mrs Gillespie is working on some focussed listening tasks with the class on a Wednesday to develop their listening skills and attention to detail.

In Numeracy this term we will be focusing on the structure of number, counting, and number sequences. This will include counting on and back from various numbers, identifying patterns in numbers, and understanding the part-part-whole relationship. Mrs Gillespie will be working on Information Handling on a Wednesday and Mrs Lister will be working on Shape, Position and Movement on a Friday.

The Dr Seuss stories we will read this term will allow us to explore lots of Health and Wellbeing topics. For example, My Many Coloured Days helps us understand and express our emotions, and Horton Hears a Who promotes compassion and celebrates individuality.  We will also be using a programme called Emotion Works to develop our emotional literacy.

As always, we will be exploring our school values of Kindness, Ambition and Respect. In our classroom, we all aim to show these values and support each other to do so. We earn “stars in the jar” when we all work together to show our school values. When the jar is full, we will pick a class treat. It’s going to be a great year!
