Hyena

Description

Hyenas are large, dog like animals who only eat meat. There are four different types of hyenas: spotted, brown, stripped and aardwolf.

Diet

Spotted Hyenas usually eat left overs but if not, they are also known to kill and eat deers, birds, lizards, snakes and a variety of different insects.

Young

A baby  hyena is called a cub. Spotted hyena cubs are born solid black and develop their spots later in life.

Habitat

Hyenas  live in Grasslands, Savannas, sub-deserts and the forests of Asia and Africa.

Interesting fact

Spotted hyenas are also known as the ‘laughing hyenas’. This is because their vocalisation can easily be mistaken and compared to  a human’s hysteric laughter!
