St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Primary School, Bo’ness

Today, Tuesday 11th November 2025, our Head Boy, Head Girl, and Deputes proudly represented our school at the Bo’ness Cenotaph for the Remembrance Day Service.

The ceremony brought together members of the local community to pay tribute to those who have served and sacrificed in conflicts past and present. Our pupils laid a wreath on behalf of the school, showing our respect and gratitude for the courage and dedication of the Armed Forces.

It was a moving and meaningful occasion, giving our young leaders the opportunity to reflect on the importance of remembrance and to represent the school with dignity and pride.

Primary 2 have been busy creating some spectacular firework pictures to celebrate the season! The children worked carefully to design eye-catching night sky scenes filled with bursts of colour and excitement.

Before creating these wonderful pieces, the class learned about firework safety and discussed how to enjoy Bonfire Night responsibly- keeping a safe distance, wearing gloves when using sparklers, and always having an adult present.

This activity helped pupils develop a range of art and design skills, including cutting, layering, and blending colours to show movement and light. They also practised their fine motor skills and creative expression while experimenting with different textures and materials.

We think their finished artwork looks amazing on display! Well done, Primary 2- your firework pictures are truly dazzling!

This week, our nursery was filled with colour, light, and joy as we celebrated Diwali – the Festival of Lights!

We were delighted to welcome one of our wonderful nursery parents, who kindly came in and helped to decorate our nursery with beautiful, festive decorations. The children loved seeing all the bright colours and sparkling lights that transformed our space!

To help our pupils learn more about Diwali, we enjoyed a range of fun and creative activities. The children made their own lanterns and diyas (small lamps), which they decorated with glitter, sequins, and vibrant paints. We also had a special Diwali-themed Bookbug session, where we read stories that helped us understand the meaning behind the celebration.

Throughout the day, the children coloured in pictures, sang songs, and explored the idea of light, love, and togetherness that Diwali represents. To finish off our celebrations, everyone got to take home some tasty treats to enjoy with their families.

It was a truly magical day full of learning, laughter, and community spirit. A big thank you to our wonderful parent helper and to all the children for joining in so enthusiastically.

Our Primary 1 children have been busy developing their creativity, problem-solving, and fine motor skills at the tinkering table this week!

Wearing their safety goggles, the children carefully explored different tools and materials, including bolts, screws, and wooden pieces. They experimented with how things fit and move, showing wonderful curiosity and perseverance.

Through this hands-on learning, the children are developing early engineering and thinking skills, as well as everyday numeracy. This experience is also helping them build confidence in using real tools safely and responsibly. It was fantastic to see their focus, creativity, and excitement as they explored and constructed at the tinkering table.

Our Primary 7 pupils showed fantastic leadership this week as they organised a spooktacular Halloween celebration for the whole school!

Each class visited the hall to take part in the Halloween Activities. from forking for apples to testing their knowledge in a Halloween Kahoot quiz. We also had a craft table, children got creative making ghost decorations to take home.

A big well done to our Primary 7s and Miss Thomas, who worked hard to plan and run the activities so smoothly. They demonstrated excellent organisation, teamwork, and leadership,  setting a great example for the rest of the school.

This week, our Primary 4–7 pupils were very lucky to have a special visit from the Bo’ness Fire Brigade, who came to deliver an important presentation about firework and bonfire night safety.

As Bonfire Night approaches, it’s a time of year that brings lots of excitement- bright colours, loud bangs, and fun celebrations. However, it’s also really important to remember how to stay safe while enjoying the festivities.

The firefighters shared lots of helpful tips on how to keep ourselves and others safe, such as standing well back from fireworks, never touching sparklers once they’ve gone out, and making sure bonfires are built in safe areas away from buildings and trees.

Our pupils listened carefully and asked some fantastic questions! The visit helped everyone understand how small actions can make a big difference when it comes to keeping safe.

A huge thank you to the Bo’ness Fire Brigade for taking the time to come in and talk to us. We really appreciate all the work they do to keep our community safe- not just on Bonfire Night, but all year round.

Your child can come to school in fancy dress on Friday 31st October and take part in Halloween themed activities.

This week, Primary 5 shared a wonderful message with the whole school — the importance of saying “yes” to God, just like Mary did. Their assembly reminded us that, like Mary, we can show courage, kindness, and faith in our own lives, even when we might feel unsure.

Through their reflections and prayers, Primary 5 helped us think about how trusting in God’s plan and showing love to others can make a real difference in the world around us.

The children also sang beautifully throughout the assembly, especially during our school hymn “The Girl Who Said Yes to God”, “Ave Maria”, and “Lord, I Lift Your Name on High”. Their singing filled the hall with warmth and faith – a lovely way to celebrate Mary and the message of hope she brings.

Well done, Primary 5, for sharing such a thoughtful and inspiring message with us all, and thank you to your teacher for helping you prepare so well. You have truly reminded us to be brave, kind, and full of faith – just like Mary.

Primary 7 had a fantastic trip to Douglas Park to round off their Climate Change and Stewardship topic. During their visit, they became Climate Detectives, exploring the park to look for clues that show how the environment might be changing due to the climate. They used their thinking skills to analyse what they saw and worked together using great teamwork skills to discuss their findings and consider what they might mean for the local area.

They also took on the role of Carbon Heroes, using their knowledge to come up with practical ideas for how Douglas Park and the wider community could reduce their carbon footprint. From planting more trees to encouraging active travel, Primary 7 showed great creativity and responsibility as young stewards of the planet.

It was a brilliant way for them to bring their learning to life and to see how small changes can make a big difference!
