This Is Our Faith is the official religious education syllabus for Catholic schools in Scotland, created by the Scottish Catholic Education Service (SCES) on behalf of the Catholic Bishops of Scotland.
The curriculum supports teachers, parents, catechists, clergy, and ultimately learners, by providing a clear framework to help young people:
-
-
Gain knowledge and understanding of Catholic beliefs
-
Respect other Christian traditions and world faiths
-
Grow spiritually through reflection, discernment, and moral decision-making
-
Live out their faith through values, beliefs, and actions
-
Learning is structured around the “Strands of Faith”—eight key areas that align with Catholic theology and guide the progression of learning from Primary 1 (P1) through to Secondary 3 (S3), and into the Senior Phase (S4–S6)
The Strands include themes such as:
-
-
Mystery of God – exploring wonder through Scripture and Church teaching
-
In the Image of God – understanding one’s vocation, gifts, and uniqueness
-
Revealed Truth of God – exploring relationships within the Trinity, conscience, prayer
-
Son of God – reflecting on how Jesus models values and actions
-
Signs of God – understanding sacraments, community, and Church presence
-
Word of God – applying sacred scripture to everyday situations
-
Hours of God – exploring prayer and liturgy’s role in life
-
Reign of God – engaging moral questions, justice, and building a world of peace
-
