Choir

Christmas in Primary 7 was an extremely busy time! Our school choir practised regularly to be ready for all their performances. We are very proud of our P7’s and P6’s and enjoyed listening to their beautiful singing!

Christmas Party was a huge success! Dancing, party food and games certainly got us all in the Christmas spirit!

Walk a Mile

P7 worked in groups to plan, measure and create 10 different routes for Walk a Mile, where our whole school takes part in a challenge to walk a mile each day. Once the routes were planned and measured out, we created coloured markers to set out each route and provide information of how may times around that route to make 1 mile.

Next we planned a whole morning to model our routes to all classes. We trained younger children and their teachers on how to take part in their ‘Daily Mile’ challenge. We had a real sense of achievement at the end of this project which we are reminded of daily when we go out to do our ‘Walk a Mile’.

Substance Misuse

We have been finding out about substance misuse. We brainstormed our prior knowledge of drugs and classified drugs into legal and illegal substances. Next we created a stereotype for a drug dealer and drug user and discussed how the realities can differ widely from our stereotypes.

We then looked at scenarios that we may be faced with in the future and explored these situations through drama.

 

Our Real War Time Heroes

WWII IDL learning provided us with opportunities to find out about our family history and we were amazed by what we discovered about our family members!

We heard about courageous family members who had been awarded medals for their bravery. We learned about strong women who took on new roles to support the war effort. We also learned about family members who were evacuated and family members  who welcomed Evacuees into their homes.

We were extremely interested to find out about one family member of a P7 pupil. Sergeant George Knight Anderson was awarded the ‘Distinguished Conduct Medal’ for leading a rescue mission whilst under enemy fire to rescue injured soldiers. He successfully evacuated three casualties and ultimately saved their lives.

 

Active Reading for WWII IDL

We have had lots of opportunities to use our active reading strategies across learning especially during  WWII IDL tasks. One of our favourite tasks was when we explored authentic WWII newspapers, independently using our reading strategies to help our understanding of the text.

P7 have been enjoying Young Leaders Training from Charlotte. We explored leadership qualities such as;

Some of our pupils have been involved in special skipping training in order to take on the responsibility of organising a lunch time skipping club with younger pupils.

 

World War II

WW2 Topic By Dan Ferguson

In class we have been learning about WW2. We have learned about many things such as: gas masks, evacuees, air raid shelters and much more. People of Britain were given a gas mask to be protected from the gas bombs. If your gas mask didn’t work or broke you had to go and buy a new one. In London and the country side there were air raid shelters built. There were different types of shelters like the Morrison and Anderson Shelters. Morrison was a hole in the ground with sand bags and grass on top. Anderson is a table with a bed underneath it. In London children were evacuated to the country side to be protected by Hitler’s bombs. There was also rationing that meant you could only have a certain amount of food. There were different ration books.

Blue – Children between 5 and 16 years of age.

Buff – Most adult had this colour.

Green – Pregnant women, nursing mothers and children under 5.

In class we did a poster about propaganda. My partner and I got to encourage people to take their gas masks where ever they went. We had a lot of fun doing this task. We also learnt about the Blitz and how life was affected in it. Blitz is short for Blitzkrieg. Blitzkrieg means lightning war.  We saw the word Ack-Ack guns that are short for Anti-Aircraft guns. Germans made a new word ‘coventrate’ which means to bomb a city.
