Welcome to Braes High School Maths Department!

“To provide a secure, positive enjoyable environment in which the individual is respected. Pupils should be encouraged and challenged in their work, with clear expectations being set for their standard of work and behaviour. The department will be committed to supporting pupils in their development.”

Lessons in the Mathematics Department are designed to enable pupils to develop the mathematical skills and understanding required for their personal needs, both in and out of school, and for the future demands of adult life, employment and further study and/or training.

Mathematics is one of the core subjects for all pupils in S1 – S3. Our courses follow a Broad General Education in the junior school which generally cover Levels 2 to 4. In S4/5/6 pupils may choose to continue with certificate courses at National 4 or 5 (Mathematics or Lifeskills) leading on to Personal Finance, Higher or Advanced Higher courses where appropriate. Progression to subsequent courses is dependent on attainment at previous levels.

In addition, we encourage all pupils to participate in a range of national and international competitions. We see this as an important form of stimulation and enrichment with potential benefits for all pupils, not just the very able.

The department have had success with our innovative use of interactive ‘Smartboards’ and all classrooms are fully equipped. We are conscious that the rapid advances in ICT will open up new opportunities for delivering stimulating lessons that develop genuine mathematical thinking in our classrooms.
