Visit to Skinflats Wood 4

Last Friday we were at the woods to learn about different kinds of seeds.

We stopped at the horse chestnut tree and there were no conkers.

We sat down under the sycamore tree and read a book called ”The Life Cycle of the Maple Tree”. The seeds of a maple tree are just like a helicopter of a sycamore tree so then we went and looked for different kinds of seeds.

We found all different kinds of seeds like blackberry seeds, rosehip seeds and blaeberries. We learned that birds eat the seeds in the fruit from the plant and it poos out the seeds.  When we got in to the woods we used an I.D guide to identify the pine tree.  Our pine trees have green cones and short pine needles on it.

Then we went back to school. My mummy picked me up then Mrs Granville picked the primary 1s and 2 up in her car then the rest were walking fast I think.

Visit to Skinflats Woods Day 4

Last Friday there were only seventeen of us because five were off. We went to the woods to learn about the life cycle of the maple tree.

We stopped at the horse chestnut tree but there were no conkers because it was still the wrong time of year.

We found a good big tree that we could sit next to and Mrs. Lennie could read us a book called “The Life Cycle of the Maple Tree”.

We learned about how different trees and plants have different shaped seeds. The seeds can be spread in different ways and Lauren found the only helicopter seed.

We all went searching for seeds. We found one helicopter seed. We found out that it travels by the wind. Conkers drop from horse chestnut trees. Seeds with parachutes travel with the wind as well. There are seeds in blackberries. Birds eat the blackberry but they can’t digest the seed inside and when birds poo they drop out the seed and this makes a new plant. Seeds are in all fruit. We found a maggot inside a rosehip. Maggots are fly larva. When we got to the woods we only had ten minutes left in the woods. In that ten minutes we went looking inside pine cones but we never saw any seeds. Mrs. Lennie had an app on her i-phone to identify the trees from the pine cones and needly cones. The tree that we were sitting beside was a Scots Pine. We found a leaf skeleton. The wee ones got a lift back to school from Mrs. Granville. After they left we did ten-second sprints every 5 minutes to keep us fit.

Visit to Skinflats Woods Day 2

Recount to the Skinflats Woods Day 2

On the 1st Of September our whole school including the little ones went to the Skinflats Woods as we are learning about how trees help us. We took a different route from the last time. Although it was a longer way to walk it took the same amount of time and it was an easier route. On our way to the woods we stopped by the chestnut tree and had a look at it because in our class novel there was a conker competition and we were going to collect conkers but they weren’t ready yet.

When we arrived we all made a pile of jackets and we got separated in to different groups. Then we had to find our own shelter. Mrs Lennie gave us a passage called “What Do Plants Eat?” Our group all read a paragraph each and started to learn about the process of photosynthesis. The way photosynthesis works is the leaves of the trees take in carbon dioxide and the sunlight then the roots part is it sucks up all the water then it makes sugar called glucose. The chemical that make the sugar is called chlorophyll. All of this together is called photosynthesis

We have a good relationship with trees as we give them carbon dioxide and in return they give us oxygen as they don’t need oxygen to survive.

After we read the passage “What do Plants Eat?” Mrs. Lennie then tested us by tying signs with an “a, b or c” to a tree and we had to run to a, b or c when she asked us the question. It was a lot of fun.

We stayed ten minutes longer to let the younger ones go ahead and we went over the process of photosynthesis once more then started to walk back to school. Although we stayed behind we still caught up with the little ones and we all walked home together.
