Mascots having fun!

Magnie and Mini Magnie who came from Burravoe Primary are having a game of snakes and ladders with Sgoil Bhaile a’Mhanaich’s mascots.

Our mascot is a Shetland Pony called Culla from our local stables, since we couldn’t have the real Culla in school we bought some cuddly versions. 🙂

Up Helly Aa

In class today we completed Up Helly Aa themed activities!

We looked at inference by analaysing Up Helly Aa pictures and discussing what we could see, what we thought and what we wondered about about each photo!

We even did our handwriting practise using Up Helly Aa themed words.

In our Maths, we had to use our knowledge of fractions to follow instructions to design a cake for an Up Helly Aa celebration.

New bikes

We got new bikes and only P5 and over can use them for safety reasons.

We cycle in our playground because we aren’t allowed to go on the road.

Next year when we are in P6 we get to do our bike ability test.

Weekend Homework

January 25, 2018 by Mrs Macgillivray | 0 comments

We are sharing our Up Helly Aa learning with the other classes in the school next week including performing some of the Up Helly Aa song.

The verse and chorus we are learning are below. The whole song with tune can be found on YouTube.

Please practise words over the weekend.

From grand old Viking centuries Up-Helly-A’ has come,
Then light the torch and form the march, and sound the rolling drum:
And wake the mighty memories of heroes that are dumb;
The waves are rolling on.

Chorus:

Grand old Vikings ruled upon the ocean vast,
Their brave battle-songs still thunder on the blast;
Their wild war-cry comes a-ringing from the past;
We answer it “A-oi”!
Roll their glory down the ages,
Sons of warriors and sages,
When the fight for Freedom rages,
Be bold and strong as they!

Up Helly Aa

On Tuesday 30th January PE5 will be holding their very own Up Helly Aa day. We plan on doing Up Helly Aa themed activities all day! From Science activities creating our own longships to investigate buoyance to baking some traditional Shetland treats.

They are currently working on an assembly to share what they are finding out about Up Helly Aa with the rest of the school.
