Design and Technology – STEM Day: 14/12/18

The recent STEM day attended by 50 second year pupils took place on Friday the 14th of December and was organised by K. Gallagher the Principal Teacher of Design and Technology. The theme of the STEM day was a design and engineering task based on the bright ideas, sustainable energy challenge sponsored by Shell Petroleum.

Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) days provide short introductory sessions for S2 students to enhance their understanding of, and aptitude for, problem solving, creativity, design, and engineering.

Pupils were involved in a smart building project with a focus on two areas of engineering. Students worked in teams of five to design and build a system which will help the world produce and consume more energy while emitting much less carbon dioxide.

Well done to all of the pupils who participated in this year’s STEM day and to the overall winners of the D&T shield. Congratulations to Amy, Hannah,  Yunus and Ewan who are pictured with Mr Fisher (DHT for S2).

CLUSTER STEM PROJECT

The Design and Technology department at Williamwood High have immensely enjoyed the experience of working with the cluster primary schools. This project has afforded us the opportunity to share design and production expertise which resulted in the pinnacle of a product engineering task. We look forward to working with Netherlee, Carolside and Busby next year.

Rampaging Chariots 2017

Congratulations to the STEM clubs S4 and S6 Rampaging Chariot teams Titan and Man Shed 2.0 who entered the Leonardo robotics completion on Saturday. The teams competed in several challenges including an assault course, sumo and football. Despite some minor mechanical issues on the day, the teams performed exceptionally well. Titan and Man Shed combined in the football competition to secure a silver medal after a dramatic penalty shootout in the final. Congratulations to Titan’s Idrees and Bryce and Man Shed’s Alastair, Matthew, Robbie, Rumaisa and David for all their hard work.

BAE Systems Naval Ships and The Scottish Council for Development and Industry (SCDI) – March 2017

The Design and Technology department are delighted to continue their partnership with BAE Systems Naval Ships, and recently took part in a get girls into engineering event hosted by the Scottish Council for Development and Industry (SCDI).

The group of girls from S3-S6 took part in a series of challenges based around the theme of ‘ boat and crane design’ . The team took part in a transport challenge and were tasked with two practical STEM activities supported by BAE Systems STEM Ambassadors and SCDI staff. The girls also enjoyed the opportunity to experience a shop floor tour to the dockside as well as a demonstration of the 3D visualisation suite.

Thank you to Rebecca MacLennan (SCDI) and Kerri Chappell (BAE) for organising such an exciting and informative event,  furthermore the department will continue to work with BAE and take part in a variety of exciting opportunities in 2017.
