4.12.20

As it was St Andrews feast day on Monday, a lot f the activities had a Scottish theme. The children learned a variety of Scottish words and completed comprehension passages using them. They learned Scottish body parts and played games to reinforce the knowledge.

Many of the children had a go at reading The Gruffalo in Scots. I was very impressed with their efforts!

This week we worked together to create a festive feel in The Greenhouse!

For Maths, we were looking at length and distance. We took our learning outdoors and measured how far the rocket flew using a trundle wheel. We estimated how high it went.

The children made good use of ICT this week to practise their core numeracy skills.

Excellent pencil control whilst learning about St Andrew.

Learning to follow the rules and take turns.

Thanks for Recycling for us!

W/E 27/11/20

This week we were working on our curling skills, turn taking, learning to  follow new rules, turn taking and communication.

Some of our children worked together to complete this very tricky jigsaw; it took a lot of perseverance and excellent observational skills!

Getting comfy for reading time!

This STEAM task involved creating a catapult from recycled materials.

Science his week looked at changing states and chemical reactions.

Creating silly sentences that follow this weeks spelling rule!

The children were getting into the Christmas spirt whilst working on their fine motor skills. They created wobbly snowmen, hanging wool hat decorations and snowman cookies to celebrate the birthday of two of our Friday group members!

Outdoor Learning

The children walked to The Jerry park to take their learning outdoors. The have been learning about different habitats as part of their Climate change topic and were keen to explore an woodland eco system.

They observed a variety of insects in their natural environments such as slugs, beetles, woodlouse, birds and worms. They were disappointed not to see any spiders but they did spot a web!

Whilst exploring the environment they discovered lots of different types of fungi, and moss and will research them next week to find out their correct names.

They worked together to complete a scavenger hunt as a team and played together taking turns at some team games.

They communicated well when working together and helped each other to overcome  fears (heights and spiders).

They even managed to squeeze in some turn taking on the play equipment.

Walking to and from the park they practised listening to and following rules through games and rhymes.

W/E 20.11.20

The Friday afternoon group completed their All about me expressive,

mixed media artwork.

The children weeded the garden and began some planting activities. They managed to measure the correct distance between each bulb and the correct depth for each bulb.

Science: The children were interested in chemical reactions. They looked at acids and alkalis. They hypothesised that as an acid, vinegar Would react chemically and break down the shell of an egg.

Within a few seconds they observed the acid reacting with the carbon  calcumate in the shell to produce Carbon dioxide bubbles. They left it for 48 hours to  see react.

How many straws can stick together and I can still suck liquid.

Happy  Birthday.

Catholic Education Week: Jesus is our shining light.

W/E 13.11.20

We looked at climate change and learned about the four types of climates on the planet.

We read, sequenced and acted out a story of a vole who’s home was flooded during what should be the dry season. The pupils shared ideas on how he could keep his seeds dry so that he would not starve.

Using potatoes from the garden, we created potato print poppy gardens for Remembrance day.

One pupil then created a volcano and island scene by painting the actual potatoes!

As one of our calming strategies, we looked at creating a spinner to help us focus on our breathing and draw attention away from a stressor.

The Tuesday group have been looking at friendship and kindness over the last few sessions. They wanted to create a movie to remind other children about the role of the Buddy bench.

They worked together to write a script and create title posters. They practised and performed their movie and recorded it for an assembly showing.

O wanted to see how far his paper aeroplane would fly. He has been working on a variety of designs. This design managed to fly 10.3m in the gym hall but 12m outside with some wind resistance. He measured the distance using a trundle wheel.

The Wednesday group have been working on floating and sinking as their science topic. This week they looked at a variety of fruit, made their predictions, carried out their experiment and researched and explained their results. They recreated the experiment in paint.

C has been working on letter formation. This week he worked independently on a variety of pencil control tasks.

W/E 6 November 2020

This week children have been focusing on Growth Mindset.

They set targets for the week.

They have challenged themselves to Try new activities or try harder tasks.

They learned that it is okay to make mistakes and that the brain is a muscle that has to be exercised.

Working on times tables:

Growth Mindset tasks

Numeracy:

Science experiment on changing form from liquid to solid to gas:

STEM challenges!

It works!

My letter formation is really improving:

I can identify the correct pronoun:

The cress we planted last week grew exceptionally well!

Floating and sinking:

Firework poems using onomatopoeia:

We read a Growth Mindset book and used AR to bring the images to life!

Outdoor learning. Exploring the environment for natural resources to add to our fireworks inspired transient art.

It doesn’t go there!

Continuing the firework theme:

We learned all about the problem of  litter from our house captains during the online assembly this week.

Learning to put  musical notes Together to create a tune.

We used Chrome music lab to create music using digital technology. The focus of the lesson was rhythm.

Posing for our HWB activity that will be continued next week.

W/E October 2020

In Maths we looked at the features of 3D shapes and their nets. The children used this knowledge to create Minecraft characters from paper nets.

Two of our boys worked co-operatively to create this fantastic jigsaw.

Rhyming words-

We have been using Halloween to inspire our maths and literacy lessons this week!

Inspired by Autumn the children worked together to create autumn wreathes and learn about different types of trees.

The Thursday group created their very own mini greenhouses to grow some salad leaves and broccoli (hopefully!)

They Had to measure out 250ml of water to create their greenhouse.

We learned about genetics as part of the “all about me” topic. From here we used our craft inspired genes and play doh parents to create a play doh monster with features of their choosing.

Noah made a LOT of offspring!

Leaf sorting outdoors.

We learned all about the features of pumpkins and worked together to cut, de3seed and cook vegetables to make some healthy pumpkin soup.

It tasted lovely!

We roasted the seeds and ate them too! We area zero waste group!

Using language of maths, the Friday morning group used rulers to create 3D shapes in the. Form of Minecraft Creepers. They measured lines and discussed angles and Listened carefully to follow instructions to produce their final product.

Well done on forming your numbers!

K built a self standing structure as tall as him!

The Friday afternoon group looked at ways of managing their emotions and identifying feelings. They learned the importance of supporting their peers.
