Old school lunches!!!

The children have been learning new skills such as grating, slicing, mixing, spreading and simple knife skills. They have put their skills to good use when creating a variety of  desserts and main meals we selected together using our old school recipe books, provided by our lovely kitchen staff! They worked cooperatively to select ingredients and follow a recipe in the correct order.
So far, along with our classic apple pie, we have made: Old school sponge cake, Granny’s rock buns and french bread pizza.

Loose parts

The boys thoroughly enjoyed exploring the loose parts and using their imaginations to role play and bring the parts to ‘life’. It was truly magical to observe the children using their imaginations during shared play.

IDL – Inside Out

We are exploring the themes of emotions and feelings through the use of the movie, ‘Inside Out’. The children are working hard to be able to identify the different emotions that occur in every day situations and to understand that it’s OK to have a wide variety of emotions but it’s how we deal with them that make us more in control of our own emotional well-being. Through discussion of real life experiences and scenarios we are building up our emotional vocabulary and sharing our opinions on appropriate and inappropriate ways to respond to situations

Apple pie!

The children worked together to look through the selection of old recipe books provided from one of our lovely dinner ladies. She informed us that she followed recipes from these books in her early career in Barrhead High School. One of the dessert choices the children were eager to make was the classic apple pie. We did add a modern twist by using shop bought pastry but if you’re feeling creative at home we will include the full recipe in our upcoming cook book.

Interview with our wonderful kitchen staff!

We had such a lovely afternoon interviewing our kitchen staff. The children worked together to create appropriate questions to ask and recorded their information in an organised way. We learned a great amount about their experiences in working in school kitchens over the years and their own personal experiences of school dinners at primary school. We learned together and we laughed together and we are now very excited to start making some tasty treats and classic meals!

Our questions and answers

A big thank you to Zoe who typed all of our questions and answers for the group.

Our 60 years Anniversary!

St. Mark’s are celebrating their 60th anniversary this year and we have teamed up with Treasure Island to celebrate the life of the school through the years. We will be focussing on a combination of our Health & Wellbeing and our Food & Technology experiences and outcomes.

Our focus is to look at school dinners at St.Mark’s across the years and observe and learn how the food we consume in schools has developed and adapted to healthier choices. We will be interviewing our wonderful kitchen staff, as a primary source of information, as many have worked and contributed to the life of the school for over 20 years!!!

We will collate information from the wider school community on their experiences of school dinners at St. Mark’s from the past.

After we have gathered all of our information the children will select some of the favourite recipes to recreate and hopefully take you on a trip down memory lane!

Welcome back!

Hello parents/carers

We have taken that past few weeks as time to settle back into life within the Greenhouse and to re-establish our positive relationships. The children have worked together to create a set of ‘class rules’ that they feel would add to creating a calm, safe and nurturing environment for them all to learn and take risks.

Class Rules:

  • No damaging property/ resources (class and others)
  • Gentle hands and feet
  • Listen to others respectfully
  • Try to make good choices
  • Use our indoor voices
  • No use of bad language
  • Remember personal space
  • Use of a Chromebook is a PRIVILEGE!!!
  • Don’t compare yourself to others
  • Always be your best self – manners, kindness, repect!

It would be great if you could discuss these rules with your child and the importance of follwing the rules to continue to work in a nurturing, safe and fun environment.

It has been so good to see and work with all of your children again and the Greenhouse team are very excited for all the new adventures ahead for this academic year.

Many thanks,

Mrs Haveron and the Greenhouse Team

Summer trip!

What a great day we had attending the cinema for our ‘Greenhouse trip’. The children travelled safely and acted very responsibly on public transport and all sat quietly and behaved superbly in the cinema. Lots of happy children were engrossed by the fun film, Peter Rabbit 2. The Greenhouse team are super proud of you all for following all of the rules to enable us all to have such a great time.

The children were also delighted to meet our special guest, Mrs Low, who came and joined in the fun with us at the cinema. Thank you Mrs Low for putting huge big smiles on the children’s faces!

Thank you children for a wonderful few months, you are all superstars and we as a team can not wait for all our new learning and adventures that will take place next term.
Have a safe and happy holiday!
#dreamteam
Love to you all and your families,

The Greenhouse Staff

Our dear friends took flight!

It was a beautiful and emotional day when we let our butterflies free into the big world. We have all grown so attached to them and the visual learning journey from caterpillar to butterfly has just fascinated us all. Nature truly is wonderful!

“Until you spread your wings you will have no idea how far you can fly.”
