Whats New In 7B

Quite a few things have been happening since our last blog post, to say the least! We’ve been practising mindfulness every few days, been reading as many books as we can for the ‘Get Caught Reading Challenge’,  learning about forces in science, read to our P2 buddies (who we’ll soon miss), seen another ceilidh off, cheating at running the Daily Mile,……………. the list is endless, as ever, in P7.We’ve also been reading our new class novel ‘The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas’ which is linked with our new topic, the Holocaust. As sad as those events were we must learn about them so that they can never happen again. We’ve been doing lots of different actiities including some art that we’ve put up on the wall. We’ve had some Mandarin lessons [ni hao!] and we did a wee bit on the auld Scots Language Week and had lots of fun during it!!! Mr Burns can turn his hand to any language. A few days ago was SHROVE TUESDAY and you know what that means… PANCAKES!!! They were really really really really amazing, thanks to Mrs Cameron and Lee from the Coop of course. Ash Wednesday marks the start of Lent which brings our SCIAF  wee boxes. This year for every £1 that SCIAF makes it will be doubled by the [very generous] UK government. We’re all eager to get going and make a difference. 3 weeks ago we had our … sigh…  our standardised tests. Not even really worthy of a mention. Lots been going on and still much more to come. Be in touch.

Halfway There!!!

Since we last updated a LOT has been going on!  We’ve been making our Xmas Fayre crafts, Hama bead Xmas trees and little wooden Santas🎅🏼 they were REALLY fun to make! In December we had a ‘community unity’ ceilidh with the P7s from Crookfur and Isobel Mair Primaries it was a great chance to meet other people. In preparation for that we practiced our 4 ceilidh dances the: Gay Gordon’s, St Bernard’s waltz, the Virginia Reel and the Dashing White Seargent. The last day of school before Xmas was really fun, everyone was really nice and happy and we loved exchanging Secret Santa presents (sooo many sweets!)

In the New Year, we travelled to Sky Academy Studios as part of a school trip. We split into four teams and each made a vlog on Plastic Pollution in our oceans and how to get tackle the problem. This helped us put perspective on the enormity of the disaster in our oceans. That just about brings  us up to now so…. goodbye.

So far, so good

A busy start to a busy year in P7B! We’ve managed to cram a lot in to the first couple of months or so. A visit to St Mirin’s Cathedral, our St Ninian’s trips, the football trip to Manchester City for some, Safety in the Park, swimming’s started …….phew, we’ve no time for work!
Only kidding, been very busy on that front too. Some revision in Maths at the start, naturally, but now we’ve ventured onto all things angles, challenging at times but fun too. We’ve also enjoyed combining writing and art with our Harwell Hall creations. Our topic this term was a bit different, we got to choose which country we wished to investigate which was good, a choice. We’re continuing with the Pope Francis Faith Award but some of us are turning our eye towards Confirmation – we’ve all chosen our Saint’s name.
An exciting year, an exciting start.

Teacher for a Day!

Our topic this term has been Natural Disasters. An activity we recently took part in was building our own lessons. We worked in groups of about 4 people. We firstly researched our assigned natural disaster, we had to learn more about it. This was independent learning. We used the Chromebooks and looked for information around how to protect yourself from this disaster, how they were formed, how to prevent them, fun facts and some examples. We then put this information into a PowerPoint and a poster. Some people worked on the poster one week and some people worked on the PowerPoint, then we swapped roles the following week. This enabled everyone an opportunity to do both roles.

We emailed our PowerPoints to Miss Hillhouse who checked over them to make sure our information was correct. Learning how to send emails is an important skill. We planned to present the PowerPoint and poster to our peers, so we also constructed a worksheet to check if they were listening and assess their learning. Our worksheet needed to have a learning intention, task, picture and factual information that linked to what we have presented, as well as a space for pupils to write their names. When we were presenting we had to have eye contact, our body facing the audience and be able to clearly explain our information. We needed to speak clearly and loudly to capture our audience’s attention and keep them interested.

We enjoyed making the posters, working with our peers and finding out new information. The information was easier to understand because it was being taught by people the same age as us. We got the chance to be the teacher! We got to hear what other people thought of what we had done, getting feedback was really helpful. We got to be flexible, decide what ideas we wanted to put into our poster and PowerPoint and take ownership of our learning. We got to correct the worksheets with our teacher, we had to remember the answers to our questions so we could quickly peer assess our friends work, which helped us learn. It was also fun to see how our peers got on and if our lesson helped them learn.

FUN FACTS: The word ‘monsoon’ comes from the Arabic word ‘mosom’, which means weather. We also learned that sometimes during a monsoon there can be a sandstorm. The moon acts as a shield against meteors. Sometimes meteors can cause earthquakes. Some of the deadliest avalanches happen in Russia, Canada and Peru. One of the ways to stop landslides and mudslides is to plant trees to block their way.

Art

In art this year we have been learning how to sketch. We have learned that we need to us the pencil lightly first, so if we need to rub it out it won’t leave marks on our page. It doesn’t need to be too accurate at first because you can always go back and change it, and add more detail. We learned about shading- light shading and dark shading, and we can smudge the pencil to create a gradient effect. We created a pencil shading piece called ‘The Titanic’. We used different shapes to create our shading, such as lines, checks and swirls. We also used texture in our shading when we created ‘Rabbit Still Life’ pieces.

We have also been learning about Pop Art. The main artists we have been studying have been Andy Warhol and Picasso. In Pop Art you use a lot of colour to make your work stand out and grab peoples attention. Andy Warhol was a very eccentric character, for example he liked to visit laundrettes so he could observe people and he liked the smells. He also made a video of himself eating a hamburger and called it art! He was very famous and he wanted to show everyone no matter how rich or important they were everyone could love and buy art. We created a ‘Coca Cola Bottle’ art piece. We used tracing paper to outline the cola bottle and then used it to create 4 identical images. We made our background contrasting, bold eye-catching colours. We used block colours as this is what Andy Warhol did.
