Virtual Work Experience – Design a Net-Zero McDonald’s Restaurant

DYW Virtual Work Experience week has been developed under My Climate Path. My Climate Path can offer 500 funded places to S3 pupils in the DYW Glasgow, West and Lanarkshire & East Dunbartonshire regions. The DYW Virtual Work Experience week will take place 1st – 5th November. Virtual Work Experience will inspire and raise the aspirations of young people to consider Construction and the Built Environment as a valuable career path. The learners will discover real-world applications of STEM and can access a whole range of exciting professional career pathways through strong industry and academic links. Content In collaboration with COYO and McDonald’s, pupils will be challenged to design a ‘Net Zero’ McDonald’s restaurant for a local community. During the week, pupils will be introduced to the concept of ‘net zero’ design. They will be asked to design an inclusive, modern restaurant, with support throughout the week from industry professionals. Pupils will be required to produce a written report over the course of the week and submit this for moderation. Successful pupils will receive a “DEC CONNECT Award” endorsed certificate. Alignment with Curriculum & Careers Advice Aligns with the DYW Career Education Standard. Strong curriculum links to STEM subjects + English, Geography, Art, Design & Technology. Young WEIR-WISE: Discovering Engineering with S2 Girls

The University of Strathclyde, in collaboration with the Weir Group, are delighted to be offering the virtual Young WEIR-WISE programme again in 2022 for female school pupils in S2. Participants will hear from staff at the University and colleagues from The Weir Group who will provide an insight into studying and working in the field of engineering. They will also be issued in advance with a Young WEIR-WISE ‘Lab Kit’ to take part remotely in practical activities which staff will guide them through during the online sessions. We received excellent feedback from pupils who attended the virtual 2021 programme and we ask that you bring this to the attention of S2 girls, particularly those that have a talent for mathematics or physical sciences. The Careers Convention was a great success again this year, many presentations were on offer as well as over 70 stalls. Accelerate course (S4/5 pupils)

If you are in S4 or S5 and would like to study any of the following: Chemistry Computer Science Electronic & Electrical Engineering Law Product Design Then you may be eligible for the Accelerate course at the University of Strathclyde.  Accelerate is a one-week programme, for pupils at the end of S4 or S5 thinking about going to university. It aims to provide a targeted focus on the pupils’ chosen area of academic interest, giving them a head start on the road to their chosen career. The 2019 programme runs from the 24th to the 28th of June. Teams of academic experts have put together week-long Challenges in each of these subjects to allow you to find out all about your area of interest and the career opportunities open. Led by undergraduate and postgraduate student mentors from the relevant fields, you will undertake a variety of group challenges, as well as attending a careers and industry afternoon. Two of the Accelerate Challenges (Chemistry; and Product Design) have official accreditation on the SCQF Framework. This means that there will be some assessment on these programmes and, should you pass this, you will gain 5 credits at level 7. Level 7 is the same as Advanced Higher or first year university work.
