Well, the weather may not have been great, but we all have had a glorious month of May in Primary 6A!
We began reading a new novel, Street Child, and have enjoyed getting to know the characters in this happy and uplifting story set in the Workhouses and hovels of Victorian London! Our topic has been The Victorians and they certainly are an interesting lot! We created a timeline of Victorian inventions and realised that we owe them a great debt! We also learned about life as a child in The Workhouse, Up a Chimney, in school and down pit. We decided that we were glad to be alive now and not then! We got a short taste of life then, when our teacher dressed up as a Victorian teacher and delivered some Victorian – style lessons. (To be honest, he looked like he was enjoying himself a little too much!)
In Maths, we have been looking at Algebra, rounding numbers to nearest whole number and nearest 1 000. We are further developing our understanding of fractions, decimals, and percentages and revisiting the properties of 2D and 3D shapes.
In Language, we have continued to work on grammar rules, spelling and handwriting. We created fact files on famous protesters, wrote sense poems about being a Chimney Child and wrote imaginative Diary of a Workhouse pieces.
We created fact files on the benefits of Renewable Energy for Earth Day. We have been looking at how our Mental Health can be affected and ways in which we can keep a positive mind set. We also began Mandarin lessons this month and we all agree that they are very interesting!
Some of our classmates delivered an interesting presentation about Eid. As it is May, we are saying a decade of the Rosary each week as well as a daily Hail Mary. We also learnt about the feast of Our Lady of Fatima.
We all enjoyed our trip to the Science Centre and the highlight for everyone was when our teacher asked us to write a recount of our visit the next day. Talk about being a Party Pooper!
We are looking forward to our last few weeks in Primary 6, before beginning a new journey next session!
