Kenya and Fairtrade

We learned from Mrs Byrne about Kenya.

She shared her own experiences of visiting Kenya.
We found out about the wet and dry seasons.

We identified similarities and differences in our homes and homes in Kenya.
We also found about the community Mrs Byrne spent time with and found out about school and church.

We looked at pictures of Kenyan banana and tea farms. We found about the jobs on the farm.

Then we acted out the process from worker to retail. Learning about the changed hands in money.

This led to a discussion about the importance of Fairtrade and getting a fair price for the farmers.

Our Final Forest School session

Our final forest school session was within the school grounds due to wintery conditions. We started by looking back and reflecting on the experiences we have enjoyed and skills we have developed throughout our sessions.

We talked about how we developed resilience and bravery through climbing and swinging and balancing.

Our exploration of the natural environment led us to ask questions and nurture our curiosity. Through this we found about trees, mushrooms and the seasons.

We demonstrated creativity by using mud and other natural materials to create our own pieces of art.

During the forest school session, we had a great time in the snow, we had a snowball fight, created a huge mud slip and built a snow man.

Print the Town session 2

We had our finally session with the East Ren Culture and Heritage team. This week our focus was buildings of Barrhead. We looked carefully at the photographs of places around Barrhead, some new and some old. We talked about places we were familiar with and things that were important in the town. We then created amazing clear line drawing which we then used to create our prints.

We will unveil our finished collaborative piece shortly.

Musical week

We have been learning different Scottish songs which led us to be interested in some Scottish musical instruments.

We were over the moon to have visitors in school this week sharing their musical talents.

Mrs Muscat arranged her son to visit to share his knowledge of the bagpipes and play as a few tunes. He talked us through how the sound travels through the drones to create sounds. The children had some fabulous questions about the materials and how it was used.

We are very grateful for the time given by the visitors.

Forest School

On a cold, crisp winter’s morning Primary 2 headed to the Forest in the search for fun. They started with a forest bath where they could hear the frozen crinkling of the grass and leaves.
Some children found ice and enjoyed melting it. Whilst some climbed and clambered around with friends.
One group dreamt of a warmer day and built a campfire. They remembered the importance of keeping safe and created a fire circle just like Mrs Carwood did when she built a fire.

Print the Town session

We  had  a wonderful session working with Lesley and Tess to explore printing. We created simple patterns using techniques similar to what they would have used in the printing mills of Barrhead.  In the pictures below you will see some superb patterns and some impressive prints. We put these together to create a collaborative piece.
