Hyacinth update

After planting our bulbs back in October, our bulbs have grown and are nearly ready to blossom.

It is likely the hyacinths will open during the holidays so pupils will be taking them home before the end of term.
As part of this process we’ve been learning how to look after plants but also recognising the role we have in nurturing the world around us!

How many trees?

Primary 2 have explored the playground looking at the trees around us. Inspired  by  the book ‘How Many Trees?’, the pupils explored the playground searching for different shapes of leaves. Then then used a leaf Id to identify the surrounding trees based on the shape of the leaves.

If you’d like to do this at home you can find the leaf id sheet here.

After this Primary 2 discussed the impact of winter on the local wildlife. We then made bird feeders mixing lard or coconut oil with bird seeds and cereals.

In class we then found out about St. Francis of Assisi and his love of nature. We remembered Pope Francis call for Care for our common home and recognised the importance of caring and providing for the animals in our world both local and worldwide.

P2B are outdoors every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Outdoor Classroom Day

Primary 2b had a great day outside.

First they completed a sound scavenger hunt with Mrs Stevens.
Then they went out with Miss McKay. First we listened to a mini beast poem and discussed what mini beasts we might find in our playground.

Others built dens. They used a range of materials and practised skills such as tying knots.

Pupils also had time to watch for shapes in the clouds but it was more like one big grey cloud then lots of different shapes.

In the afternoon Primary 2 create posters encouraging others to look after the playground by putting litter in the bin.
