Week Beg 22nd April

In Literacy this week we have been studying poetry.  During our Daily Literacy Lessons, we were reading poems and looking for examples of similes, onomatopoeia and personification in them!  We each chose our favourite poem from our readers and on Friday we had a Poetry Recital in class!  Everyone read with such confidence and enthusiasm.  It was good to hear different poems and we noticed that even if someone read the same poem as someone else it sounded different depending on the rhythm and what words were emphasised.
In writing, we continued with the theme of poetry by creating our own poems on the theme of ‘Once Upon a Dream’.  We are aiming to use different poetry techniques and punctuation to help the reader imagine our dream and to make our poems interesting.  We will let you know how they end up next week!

In maths, we are have been comparing and ordering fractions visually!  We were using a Fraction Wall to identify equivalent fractions too.   It’s been a challenge but with perseverance we are now experts at using the Fraction Wall to help us with our learning!

It was St Mark’s Feast Day and we celebrated with a whole school mass.  Mrs Sutherland hadn’t heard of our St Marks school song so we enjoyed teaching her! 😀

In music, we have started a new block of learning and we are learning how to compose our own song!  We created two lines on Thursday and can’t wait to make some more! 🎵

It’s been a very creative week in P5b!!

Next week we have our ‘Come and Learn with Me’ afternoon on Monday and our Learning Assembly on Friday.
We can’t wait to show off how fantastic we are!!

WB 19.2.34

This week in P5b we were continuing our class novel called “The Boy At The Back Of The Class”. We managed to finish Chapter 13 and we will be starting Chapter 14.

We also started French after a while, we decided to revise French colours as we were trying to describe our partner in French. We described our hair, eye colour and skin with knowledge of our body parts in French we could say eyes and hair in French.

We had art after a while as well and we learned about Sarah Kwan, she is a great artist. We learned that she was from China but grew up in Scotland and felt Scottish. This inspired us to make our own drawing combining two different cultures. We had to combine Scotland with our own culture or a culture that we are interested in.

We had a very busy week in P5b and it was very fun!

Lunar New Year

P5 had a great time learning about Lunar New Year from our classmate.  The children then created their own red lantern and decorated it to make it as bright and beautiful as possible!   We will decorate our class with the lanterns to bring luck and good wealth!!

WB 5th Feb Week 23

Languages Week Scotland:

The children enjoyed creating a multi-lingual colouring in book to celebrate Languages Week Scotland.  Pupils decided which country they wanted to focus on.  They researched the country making notes of interesting facts before creating the colouring in page sharing some famous landmarks from the country, the flag and including  some basic greetings in bubble writing too.
We are looking forward to sharing the finished book with the children in p3 and hope that learn about different countries and cultures from our book!!

Topic:

We have used all the information we have learned about ourselves from our discussions with parents at home and from our shoulder partner interviews  to create an ‘All About Me’ fact file.  We can identify and celebrate that we are all unique and that’s it’s ok to be different.

We have really enjoyed learning about different cultures and religions from our fabulous visitors.  Thank you so much for giving up your time and sharing with us what it was like to like somewhere else and share your culture and beliefs with us.

Week 16 and 17 Learning

We have had a very busy 2 weeks at school!  Here are some of the things that have been happening inside our class.

Today we could wear our Christmas jumpers to school we loved seeing everyone looking so bright and colourful!  Some jumpers had lights and music and some people had Christmas themed headbands!!

This morning we visited p6 for their ‘Grow £5’ event!  What an amazing amount of products and events to take part in.  Our favourites were the hot chocolate cones, the bracelets and the reindeer balloons.   Mrs Sutherland loved the ‘Knock the Santa Cups down’ stall, she thought it was a great idea to have things to do and not only things to buy! Very creative!

We took part in a live event about the Ancient Egyptians.  It was pretty interesting because it taught us about artefacts and we learned about a new artefact called a ‘Shabti’.  A small Egyptian figure that was placed in the sarcophagus with the mummy to help remind the person to carry out specific tasks in the afterlife.
We got to ask the presenter questions which he answers LIVE!!  We were excited to see Primary 5a also ask questions!   We saw a sarcophagus, canopic jars and some other artefacts which are usually displayed in the museum.

Our writing focus this term has been information writing.  Last week, we wrote about Brilliant Barrhead sharing lots of information about where we live, the Dams to Darnley and the Foundry.   This week we independently wrote a piece  about the Egyptians using all the knowledge we had learned about them since August.

In music, we learned to play ‘Jingle Bells’ and ‘We Wish You a Merry Christmas’ on glockenspiel and bells.   We had to listen to each other and work together to keep the rhythm.

In DLL, our readings book have been play scripts.  We have been working on expression and pace when reading out loud the plays to each other.   We then started acting them out developing our understanding of a character.  On Monday we are going to be performing them to everyone in the class.  During independent learning time, some people enjoyed having a chance to act out other people’s scripts too!  We are really enjoying acting and doing drama with our literacy lessons.

During our independent learning time, we have been doing measurement with the Kapla blocks, creating intricate Christmas themed models with the Kapla such as making Santa’s house, a church and Santa’s elves with lego.  With the circuit board we made the fan spin and it flew.  We have been busy designing an app for the Make it Happen Festive App competition!! We have been using our creative skills, thinking skills and problem solving skills.

On Friday afternoon we were invited to watch the dress rehearsal of the primary 2 Nativity!  We are so proud of our family and friends in p2 who performed confidently and were fabulous and entertaining!

Our Health and Well being lessons are on the theme of Relationships this term.  So far we have focused on how to be a good friend and  showing empathy.  We enjoyed identifying the qualities that would make a perfect friend and then creating the perfect potion with these ingredients!  We also enjoyed acting out scenarios showing empathy to others.

Enjoy your weekend,

Alfie, Arya and Mrs Sutherland.

Week 15 Learning -Poetry

We have been learning about poems as part of our Daily Literacy Learning lessons. We noticed that poems have a rhythm and can include rhyming words.   We learned that poems can tell a story and also share some thoughts and feelings.

We chose our favourite poem from our reading book to practise and then we recited our poem to the class.

The children were fantastic poets demonstrating bravery and confidence and were also wonderful supportive audience members being polite and respectful to the performers! 😍

To celebrate Catholic Education Week, we have been learning about a variety of Saints including St. Damien, St Andrew and St Cecelia.
As St Cecelia is the patron saint of music, poets and instrument makers we created our own poems.  We used the tune of ‘Three Blind Mice’ as our inspiration and created our own fabulous poems about being in Primary 5b.  The children were very creative and produced excellent poems about his great p5b is!
See Google Classroom for these videos.

WB 18th September -Music Lessons

P5b have been enjoying music lessons with Mrs Carey.  We have been learning about rhythm and pitch! We have been using our focusing skills and our team working skills when working in groups to throw and catch the ball in time with the song.
Mrs Carey taught us a new song which has actions.  Ask us to teach you it at home!!

WB 4th September -Week 5 Egyptian Artwork

Look at this amazing piece of Egyptian art that Arya brought in to share with the class.

Primary 5b enjoyed looking the picture.  We noticed the colours were amazingly bright and that the papyrus felt a little bit crispy, hard and grainy.

We also noticed the people in the painting were wearing eye make up and that there was symbols drawn on the walls.  We wondered what the symbols meant.🤔

Thank you so much for sharing your precious art with us Arya.
