Autumn Art

Our new topic is The Weather following an amazing Dinosaur topic!

We have already learned about the different types of weather, and created our favourite ones using different materials (oil pastels, paint, pens, salt and glue, and crayons!)

 

We have started to explore the Seasons of the Year and the different things that happen during each Season: Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. We have spent a lot of time exploring Autumn- the Season we are in just now! Here are our wonderful Autumn trees with red, orange and yellow leaves falling off of the trees.

Outdoor learning

Today the Tigers were outside collecting leaves. We found leaves of lots of different shapes and colours! We brought our leaves inside to make pressed pictures, we can’t wait to show you once they’re ready!

 

Numeracy time

What an amazing week we have had learning about our numbers.

We went on a number hunt… we caught lots of big ones! We had so much fun. We hunted for numbers 0-10 using our number magnifying glasses. We looked for the numbers, pictures of the number, the number in dots, and objects that have that amount! Well done boys and girls you were amazing at identifying the numbers.

 

 

We have also been working really hard with our addition! Addition can be tricky but it’s no challenge for P1b. The foxes and mice have been exploring     Addition with numbers, different shapes, objects and pictures. Well done boys and girls!

 

 

We have also been exploring maths and numeracy in lots of different ways through play. Fantastic learning everyone.

Outdoor learning

It has been very wet outside this week so we haven’t been able to take many pictures with the iPad but we’ve still been taking our learning outside!

The Tigers continued their search for carrots in the planters. They learned to identify the leaves from the top of the carrots so that they knew where they would be able to find them!

Some of the Giraffes have been experimenting with force. They rolled the tyres up to the top of the hill and let them go. They took turns at estimating how far they thought the tyres would roll!

Martin and Annabelle couldn’t believe how strong the wind was! They found leaves and held them up in the air to see the wind blow them away. They were able to tell which way the wind was blowing by watching which way the leaves flew.

Some of the girls started building a castle using the blocks. Queen Lilja asked the girls to make a bed that she could lie on in the castle and the girls managed to make two beds, one for the Queen and one for her pet dog! They tested their beds by having a go at lying on them! Well done girls!

Some of the children were helping to weed the planters. We found lots of worms and some carrots! This group also learned to identify the leaves from the top of the carrots and used this to help them to find more!

Jack and Kyle had a jumping competition! They jumped together to see who could jump the highest!

Lacy made a swing! She used some material that was tied around the climbing frame to make a seat and she spent lots of time swinging backwards and forwards. Well done Lacy!

 

 

Outdoor learning

We’ve had some lovely sessions outside this week!

All groups have had turns at getting the pots filled ready for planting. We planted spring onions and radishes and we will be keeping an eye on them making sure they get plenty of water to help them grow!

Some of the Panthers were experimenting with the equipment to make their own slides. They had great fun sliding down the different combinations!

Some of the Giraffes made a band! They used the different instruments to make a beat and Lorena made up a song to sing!

Some of the Tigers were experimenting with the water. They made a water slide with it and poured it down, catching as much of it as they could at the bottom! They noticed the numbers on the side of the measuring jug and learned that it was a scale to show them how much water they had caught!

The Tigers also used some of our new outdoor books to choose projects for us to complete and also to identify some of the insects that we found! We found a slug and a spider and we looked them up in the bug book and read about them.

Homework

A big thank you to parents and carers who have been working hard at home to support your child’s learning. It really is paying off and we appreciate all of your help and support.

We understand finding time at home can be difficult and we do not expect homework to be done every night. We also don’t expect all of the tasks to be done so please choose which ones suit you and your children.

Homework in P1 is very important in helping reinforce learning we do in class, therefore we encourage you to find some time (no matter how small!) throughout the week to dedicate to homework.

Jolly Phonics and Sounds

Included in the homework this week will be a sound booklet (replacing the yellow book that was handed out last week). This will show all of the sounds and actions the children have learned in class so far. Helping the children know the action then helps them learn the sound: this sheet will help you know them as well. As we move on to more trickier sounds like ‘ai’ and ‘oa’ we would love if you would continue to practise all of their sounds during homework time if possible, as well as continuing with the homework menu.

The sounds the children have learned and are learning for the week will be highlighted!

This weeks sounds – f, b, ai

Story world words

Please continue to practise these with your children if possible. Please tick off the words they know on the sheet so we can continue to practise the words they are struggling with at home. If you think they know the words well, start to select random words out of order and see if they can recognise them. Ask them to look at the beginning sound or stretch it out if they need some help.

Once your child has learned all of their words, we will be able to move them on to the next sheet of new words. These words are vital to help them read words they can’t sound out. These will support reading in the story books they will receive after the October holidays.

Your child will get home 2 story books per week (where possible). One on Monday and another on Wednesday. Your child will read the speech bubbles or phrases with words that feature on these sheets, and parents can read the long pieces of text.

Wordbox Booklet

After the October holidays the children will receive a booklet with words in columns. Each week the children will have a column to try to read on their own. Blending sounds together will be the skill they are practising. The words for that week will be dated with the week beginning. Again, please tick the words your child can do with ease.

Number

I will include some numbers 0-20 inside the homework folder. If you wish to do some number work with your child here are some ways to encourage number recognition or learning:

  • Ordering the numbers  (forwards and backwards)
  • Can you find me this number (show number) of things in the room?
  • Can you draw me this number?
  • The missing number (order some numbers and leave one out, get your child to find the missing number)
  • Can you find me number __? (lay them out on the floor)
  • Addition – using the numbers to find ways to add (one way I do this at home is find pasta shells, M&Ms or anything solid you have at home and use these to help add)

Panthers

The Panthers had a wonderful time outside today!

Some of our children were exploring force! They started by rolling tyres from the top of the hill. They realised that the harder they pushed, the tyre will go further and faster! They then explored what happened when they rolled down the hill themselves. What great fun!

Laughlin, Arya, Shay, Fletcher, Orla, Tola and Maja all took turns are racing around the hill! They timed themselves using the stopwatch on Mrs Carwood’s phone to see who was the fastest. We are very fast runners!

Ellie and Emmie worked together to collect lots of stones. They lined them up and counted them and worked out that they had 11 altogether. When Ellie found another they worked out that they had made 12 and they wrote the number 12 using the chalk. They then went off looking for more and when we counted them together we realised that they had 24! We were able to write the number 24 under the stones! Well done girls!

Mila, Leon, Logan, Fletcher and Laughlin found a worm! They wondered where it might have come from. They gave it a new home in our pumpkin patch!

TJ showed Shay and Ivy how to write his name and they gave it a brilliant go on their own! Well done you two!

TJ made up a brilliant long jump game that some of the children had a go of in the MUGA. Thanks TJ!

Fantastic work Panthers!

Giraffes

The Giraffes have had a very busy morning outside!

Jack and James demonstrated some fabulous balancing skills!

Lilly, Lilja,  Annabelle and Isla Rose drew some beautiful pictures.

Lorena asked Mrs Carwood to help her make an obstacle course! We added ladder runs, blocks and crates and finished it with a hopscotch! Lots of the other children had a go!

James was so busy making this amazing den. He used all of the blocks and then some of the crates to make a roof. He was using it to hide from the baddies! He asked Mrs Carwood to help him to write his name on it. Amazing achievement James!

Lorena designed a beautiful castle that she is going to build with the small blocks when she goes back to class after break!

Mohammed Almeer made his own game using chalk. He wrote all of the numbers to 8 first of all then hid them by colouring them in. You had to remember where the numbers were hidden and jump on the right ones to win! We made it harder by adding all of the numbers up to 15! Well done Mohammed Almeer!

Lacy designed a beautiful dress for her mum using the chalk. She said that mum would wear it to a wedding!

Kyle, Tony, Clayton and Jack used the equipment to be able to climb up and over the board! They worked together as a team so effectively, well done boys!!

What a fantastic morning Giraffes, well done!
