WB 15th January

It has been a busy week in P5B!                        Our class novel is the book called ‘The Boy at the Back of the Class’. We have been hoping to reach the end of chapter 10 and we managed to do it!

We have also learned a new type of writing called recount writing.  Recount writing is when you recall and evaluate past experiences/adventures.

In math lessons, we have been doing more word problems using bar models, number lines and digit calculations.

Happy New Year!! Week 19 learning!

Happy New Year from everyone in P5b!!

We have had a very busy first week back!
We have been revising maths concepts this week and sharing the different strategies we each used to work out the answer to the questions given.

We enjoyed our independent learning time during maths this week some of us worked as a team try to beat the clock during ‘Hit the Button’ and some tried to create symmetrical patterns with blocks/Lego.  Some children challenged themselves with trying tricky levels on ‘The Daily 10’  and we enjoyed sorting out the fraction pieces and exploring what different sized fractions looked like and comparing them to each other!
Mrs Sutherland noticed lots of excellent mathematical thinking and conversations happening!!

In music, we were listening to a lovely Scottish song and were able to identify the instruments we heard in the piece -penny whistle, bagpipes and guitar.  We then sang along with the track and Mrs Carey played the guitar.

Our writing focus this term is recount writing.  We started off our block by identifying the key components of example recount texts and looking at the language used to sequence the main events!!
Ask us at home to tell you the purpose of recount writing and the four key features of a recount writing.
We are excited to retell events and experiences.

In PE, we are continuing our block of ceilidh dancing lessons in preparation for our Stage Ceilidh!  We worked with p5a and learned a new dance.
We  started a new topic of striking and fielding!  We had fun playing a game of Cone Collecting where we had to demonstrate our teamwork skills and had the chance to practise thinking about playing a game using tactics!

For our new class topic we will be learning about culture and diversity.

It has been busy first week!!

Week 16 and 17 Learning

We have had a very busy 2 weeks at school!  Here are some of the things that have been happening inside our class.

Today we could wear our Christmas jumpers to school we loved seeing everyone looking so bright and colourful!  Some jumpers had lights and music and some people had Christmas themed headbands!!

This morning we visited p6 for their ‘Grow £5’ event!  What an amazing amount of products and events to take part in.  Our favourites were the hot chocolate cones, the bracelets and the reindeer balloons.   Mrs Sutherland loved the ‘Knock the Santa Cups down’ stall, she thought it was a great idea to have things to do and not only things to buy! Very creative!

We took part in a live event about the Ancient Egyptians.  It was pretty interesting because it taught us about artefacts and we learned about a new artefact called a ‘Shabti’.  A small Egyptian figure that was placed in the sarcophagus with the mummy to help remind the person to carry out specific tasks in the afterlife.
We got to ask the presenter questions which he answers LIVE!!  We were excited to see Primary 5a also ask questions!   We saw a sarcophagus, canopic jars and some other artefacts which are usually displayed in the museum.

Our writing focus this term has been information writing.  Last week, we wrote about Brilliant Barrhead sharing lots of information about where we live, the Dams to Darnley and the Foundry.   This week we independently wrote a piece  about the Egyptians using all the knowledge we had learned about them since August.

In music, we learned to play ‘Jingle Bells’ and ‘We Wish You a Merry Christmas’ on glockenspiel and bells.   We had to listen to each other and work together to keep the rhythm.

In DLL, our readings book have been play scripts.  We have been working on expression and pace when reading out loud the plays to each other.   We then started acting them out developing our understanding of a character.  On Monday we are going to be performing them to everyone in the class.  During independent learning time, some people enjoyed having a chance to act out other people’s scripts too!  We are really enjoying acting and doing drama with our literacy lessons.

During our independent learning time, we have been doing measurement with the Kapla blocks, creating intricate Christmas themed models with the Kapla such as making Santa’s house, a church and Santa’s elves with lego.  With the circuit board we made the fan spin and it flew.  We have been busy designing an app for the Make it Happen Festive App competition!! We have been using our creative skills, thinking skills and problem solving skills.

On Friday afternoon we were invited to watch the dress rehearsal of the primary 2 Nativity!  We are so proud of our family and friends in p2 who performed confidently and were fabulous and entertaining!

Our Health and Well being lessons are on the theme of Relationships this term.  So far we have focused on how to be a good friend and  showing empathy.  We enjoyed identifying the qualities that would make a perfect friend and then creating the perfect potion with these ingredients!  We also enjoyed acting out scenarios showing empathy to others.

Enjoy your weekend,

Alfie, Arya and Mrs Sutherland.

Week 15 Learning -Poetry

We have been learning about poems as part of our Daily Literacy Learning lessons. We noticed that poems have a rhythm and can include rhyming words.   We learned that poems can tell a story and also share some thoughts and feelings.

We chose our favourite poem from our reading book to practise and then we recited our poem to the class.

The children were fantastic poets demonstrating bravery and confidence and were also wonderful supportive audience members being polite and respectful to the performers! 😍

To celebrate Catholic Education Week, we have been learning about a variety of Saints including St. Damien, St Andrew and St Cecelia.
As St Cecelia is the patron saint of music, poets and instrument makers we created our own poems.  We used the tune of ‘Three Blind Mice’ as our inspiration and created our own fabulous poems about being in Primary 5b.  The children were very creative and produced excellent poems about his great p5b is!

Solo Talk Presentations!

Wow!!  Primary 5b have been working hard at home researching and preparing for their presentations on our class topic Ancient Egypt!!

We have enjoyed the presentations and learning about Egyptian cats, pyramids, Gods and the Egyptians masks to name a few of the topics!

The children were demonstrating lovely listening and super sitting skills showing respect and giving encouragement for their peers who were presenting.

Thank you so much to those at home who helped the children prepare such wonderful presentations.

Collaborative learners in p5b

Primary 5b have been working on developing their  team working  skills this week by collaborating in groups during many tasks this week.
On Tuesday they explored estimating measurements of a variety of objects.   They had to estimate the mass, length, capacity and area or objects found in the class using known objects to compare it to.  They worked well to listening to each others thoughts and justifications.

The children  had the opportunity to lead their learning by deciding what skills to work on during their independent learning time.  Some children worked as a group challenging  themselves to build complicated structures using the Kapla blocks, demonstrating resilience and patience.  Other children worked on the multiplication skills with a game of BAM!   This activity develops their fast recall of multiplication facts in a supportive environment encouraged and helped by their friends.   Some other children decided to create more stained glass windows of saints they have learned about for our RE display.   The children have shown lots of creativity, kindness and excellent team working skills this week.

As it was Book Week Scotland, the children enjoyed learning about other peoples books during our Book Bingo Activity.  We spoke about our favourite book and got to answer  questions about it.  Many children enjoyed swapping books to have a little read of other peoples books and were excited to have discovered a new author / a new books to read.   Liz Pichon and Jacqueline Wilson maybe have got a lot of new fans!!

Week 12 Learning (WB 6th November)

During assembly on Wednesday, Primary 5 shared 2 of their Make your Mark experiences with the whole school.  Abiela and Logan from p5a spoke about when we made smoothies. Anas and Hawaa from our class presented about Pond Dipping.  Our presenters were fabulous!  P5 were fantastic audience members encouraging and supporting their classmates who were bravely leading the presentation.

We recapped the names of angles during our maths lesson on Tuesday with this fun song! It’s so catchy the song has been stuck in Mrs Sutherland’s head all week!!

In French this week we enjoyed playing a game of ‘Jacque A Dit’ (Simon Says).  It was a fun way of testing our knowledge of french body parts!  Ask us how to play at home and see how well we do!!

Our focus in PE is Scottish Ceilidh dancing in preparation for our next Make your Mark learning experience.  We had fun learning the Virginia Reel! It was tricky to keep in time with the music but we know we will be experts soon!

It is Book Week Scotland next week, children are welcome to bring in their favourite book to read and talk about in class! 📚❤️

Have a good weekend,

Mrs Sutherland.

Animation

Primary 2 drew their own reindeers.

Then used an app called ChatterKid to make their own animations!

They had to capture an image and use the record functions to record the speech. Pupils were then able to add filters, stickers and text.

Unfortunately I wasn’t able to share them all but there will be plenty more opportunities!
