Rekenrek

Today the children were introduced to Rekenreks. Rekenrek, or arithmetic rack, was designed by Adrian Treffers, a mathematics curriculum researcher at the Freudenthal Institute in Holland, to support the natural development of number sense in children. Smaller versions consist of two rows of 10 beads.

We have been using these to reinforce number recognition and calculations up to 20.

Categories and sorting

Following on from sorting Living and Non-living things, the children have been challenging themselves by coming up with their own categories.

(I tried to test the children by putting the photos into the wrong categories.  They spotted the mistake instantly!)

They managed to come up with lots of interesting categories such as,

Eat and Can’t Eat

Legs and No Legs

Water, Wings and Land

Home and Farm

Wild and Tame

Time

This week, some of the children have been learning about time.

In particular, we have been learning to read o’clock and half past on an analogue clock.

To help us, we have constructed our own clock and have used meter sticks to represent the hour and minute hands.

Alphabetical order

This week’s Grammar lesson was on alphabetical order, so we decided to create our own alphabet to display on our Literacy and English wall.

Everyone was given a piece of card with a letter on it and through the use of dictionaries, we selected a word to write and a matching picture.

After completing our cards, we used our knowledge of the alphabet (and some teamwork) to arrange ourselves into alphabetical order.

We are very proud of our alphabet and a few other classes in the school would like one of their own.

Baptism of Jesus

Over the last few weeks, we have been celebrating the Baptism of Jesus by his cousin John the Baptism in the River Jordan.

This has lead into a discussion about our own baptisms when we are welcomed into Jesus’ family and into the Christian community of His Church.

I also promised to share a photo with the children of my recent pilgrimage to the Holy Land where I renewed by Baptismal Rites in the River Jordan.

Adverse weather

Please note the following instructions regarding Adverse Weather:

Adverse Weather

In the past, we have had severe disruption as a result of bad weather around this time last year. In the event of a similar situation arising this winter we have put a few strategies in place. East Renfrewshire schools will only be closed in extreme circumstance.

  • If the school is closed during the course of a school day you will be contacted, in the first instance, by text message. Please ensure we have a current mobile phone number on our records for this purpose.
  • The text will ask you to make arrangements to collect your child as soon as possible. You cannot reply to this message.
  • Please don’t telephone the school unless absolutely necessary as we have a limited number of external lines.
  • Your child will be kept here until someone comes for him/her.
  • Once the school has been officially closed regular updates will be posted on the East Renfrewshire and school website and updates posted on Twitter.

In the event of heavy snow as first priority our janitor will clear a path to the breakfast club door from the stairs. Look out for signs directing you if we have to make any changes to the usual routine.

Thank you!

Whole School Homework – First Minister’s Reading Challenge

This week the whole school homework will be focusing on the First Minister’s Reading Challenge. The blue booklets were handed out in Aug/Sept and Primary 2 should find their booklets in their orange homework folders.  This week’s whole school homework is to ensure they are up to date and reflect your child’s most recent read books.  We will be looking at the booklets in class this Friday.

There is also some suggestions of ways to engage your child in reading out side of school.

Primary 2 Read, Write, Count bags

In November Primary 2 visited the Foundry, where they received yellow bags with 3 reading books, numeracy games and a note pad.

Please let us know what you thought of these bags by filling out the Parental  survey at the following link   https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/PXCWGJ2

Also, if you fill out the survey you stand the chance of winning some great, hand-picked prizes such as GOODIE BAGS filled with books, games and activities for all the family to enjoy.

The deadline to complete this is Monday 4 March 2019.
