Sumdog

In Primary 2, we use Sumdog as our Numeracy and Mathematics homework on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s.  Research has shown that at least 30 minutes of Sumdog per week has a beneficial impact on the development of Numeracy and Mathematics skills.

Moreover this research, Sumdog Effectiveness Study, conducted in Glasgow schools showed,

“that the length of time spent using Sumdog has a highly significant,
positive impact on students’ mathematics improvement.  Students who spent an average of 1 hour per week on Sumdog progressed 3 times faster in mathematics than students who spent less than 5 hours on Sumdog over the 6 month study.”

Sumdog can be accessed through the children’s Glow Launch Pad, the Sumdog website on PC’s or through the Sumdog app on phones and tablets.

Comments Off on A good sentence

A good sentence

We have been learning about what makes a good sentence.  In Primary 1, we learned how to construct simple sentences with a noun and one verb,

I see a dog.

In Primary 2, we are learning how to construct more complex sentence that will create interest for our readers.  We do this by adding adjectives,

I see a black dog.

I see a big black dog.

To create longer more interesting sentences, rather than several short sentences, we use connectives.

I see a big black dog.  He is in the park.  He is holding a bone.

I see a big black dog running in the big park whilst holding a big bone.

Finally, we are learning to use WOW words in our writing to replace common words such as ‘big’.

I see a shaggy black dog running in the adventure park whist holding a gigantic bone.

Have a look at this document about VCOP to find out how children’s writing is being developed in St. Mark’s Primary.

Comments Off on Spelling

Spelling

Each Monday and Wednesday the children are given spelling homework made up of 8 to 10 words in total. These words are used in the Spelling assessment that is carried out in class every Friday, so it is very important that these words are practised at home.

There are lots of fun ways you can help your child with this. If you child is having difficult with the sounds of the letters, Jolly Phonics have a great free app that provides help with the sound and formation of letters, as well as the song and actions that go with them.  Jolly Phonics is the phonic scheme that your child has been using in school since Primary 1, so they will be very familiar with it.

This website, Reading Eggs,  provides lots of fun activities that can be used to help your child with spelling at home. As you can see from this website, spelling doesn’t need to be boring but practice is the key to confident spelling.

Foundry visit

We will be going to the Foundry this Tuesday morning for our second library visit this year.  We will meet Mary the librarian and have the chance to borrow a book again. Have a chat with your child about books and find out if there is a particular book that they would like to borrow, as the library staff will be only too happy to help them find it.

Remember to record your new book, any any other books you’ve read, in your First Minister’s Reading Challenge booklet.

The Twits: stinky beards

After finishing the hilarious Michael Bond’s “Paddington takes the test”, we took a class vote and decided to move on to Roald Dahl’s disgusting “The Twits”.

Mr and Mrs Twit are a filthy couple who never wash. Mr Twit has a stinky beard that is full of everything that he eats. During Golden Time this week we made our own stinky beards. Have a close look at the beards to see all the loathsome things they contain.
