NETHERLEE VS ST JOSEPH

On a windy Thursday afternoon, Netherlee Primary football team faced a strong St Joseph’s team at Netherlee playing fields.

Netherlee started off to a strong start putting lots of pressure on the St Joseph’s defence. Inside the first 5 minutes, we slaughtered home a well worked goal that was nicely finished by Kerr Mackie. With the wind against us and our defence struggling by St Joseph`s high pressure, Ewan McCall pulled out a last minute save. However, soon we could not cope with St Joseph strikers and lost 3 goals in short succession. With half time looming, we were playing some good football but couldn’t take our chances.

In the second half, Shay O`Dowd made good decisions and changed our formation to 2-1-2-1. From there Netherlee began their comeback with Daniel Gear whipping in a great corner and nicely headed in by Kerr once again. The defence coped well and put in some strong tackles annoying the St Joseph`s attack.

Our attack once again put through some great balls and eventually got the third and last goal. We fought hard and brought it back to 3-3. Ewan McCall made some brave, strong and difficult saves to keep us in the game.

With 10 minutes to go, we once again lost 2 fatal goals which sadly lost us the game 5-3.

P7 Sports Day at Williamwood High School

On Wednesday 22nd April all the P7 pupils from Netherlee , Carolside and Busby went to a sports day to Williamwood High School. We all got put into different teams and all of the schools were mixed up. Then we all started to do the different sports. The activities were hockey, football and basketball and we all had fun. The S6 pupils who are doing their Young Leaders Award (like the P7 pupils in our school) were in charge of the groups. It was a great opportunity to meet some of the children that might be in our new classes and to top it all off, the sun was shining the whole day!

Scottish Schools Cross Country Championships

On Saturday 18th April at Kirkcaldy High School, 19 of our primary 6 & 7 pupils competed in the Scottish Schools Cross Country Championships.

It was a beautiful warm and sunny day which was perfect weather for spectators but made running the mile course even more challenging. The standard of competition was extremely high and all of our runners gave their best and did themselves and the school proud.

Netherlee competed in the second race for each group as schools with names beginning A-K run in one race and L-Z in a separate race. Around 150 pupils were in each race.

Last to run after being fantastic supporters of our other teams were the primary 7 boys. All boys had brilliant runs with the whole team finishing in the top 60. Christopher Watson-Sweeney was the school’s top finisher in an excellent 27th place. Stephen Alpine and Michael Alba pushed each other in the race to finish just 1 place apart in 47th and 48th. Ben Galloway came home in 54th place and Robbie Currie completed the team shortly after in 58th place.  In the team results, the boys were 7th out of 21 teams.

Congratulations to all of our runners, they were a credit to the school in their performances and behaviour! Thank you to them and their families for taking a day out of their Easter holidays to represent Netherlee.

P7 Boys Football

On the 26th March 2015 Netherlee primary football team faced off against Giffnock Primary at Woodfarm High School.

The match started off well for Netherlee who put lots of pressure on the Giffnock defense and we were unlucky not to score but the Netherlee defense gave the ball away and were too high up the pitch and this led to Giffnock scoring a goal to make it 1-0.

Netherlee kept their heads up and soon afterwards got a goal back through a through ball and a nice finish from Shay O’Dowd to make it 1-1, Assisted by Stephen Alpine.

Netherlee had what seemed like easy control of this match but with the defense again pushing too high up the field Giffnock were able to get a chipped ball over the top and their striker found the net again to make it 2-1.

At the end of the first half Kerr Mackie went up front and hit the woodwork twice with two unlucky shots.

Some nice passing from our team led to the ball being played by Ben Galloway through to Daniel Gear who played and unselfish pass to Shay O’Dowd who equalised just before half-time.

Early second half was dominated by our team with Giffnock making some excellent saves from strong shots by Daniel Gear, Stephen Alpine and Shay O’Dowd but a stray throw in from us was intercepted by our opponents and they clinically finished to make the score 3-2 to Giffnock. Things looked bad for Netherlee.

With around 8 minutes left Euan Menzies ran through from the left-back position to control Stephen Alpine’s throw in. His thunderous shot deflected by a Giffnock defender and the ball flew into the back of the net.

In the late moments of the game Ben Galloway made an overlapping run and from a tough angle put Netherlee up for the first time that day, assisted by Kerr Mackie.

Sadly not for long as with 2mins left Giffnock equalised through a defensive mistake it looked as If Netherlee would have to settle for a draw.

However with 30 seconds left Daniel Gear played a brilliant pass to Kerr Mackie who cut inside on his weaker foot and smashed the ball into the far bottom corner to seal a last minute win for Netherlee making the final score 5-4 to Netherlee. Overall Netherlee deserved the win and it was a great performance for their first game together.

Well done to the girls and thank you to Mrs McCarthy and Mrs Sneddon for taking the girls to the event!

P7 Netball Tournament

On Thursday 19th February we played in a friendly netball tournament against our cluster at Williamwood High School. In the tournament we played against St Joseph’s and Carolside. We won both our matches, scoring 6-0 against St Joseph’s and 5-1 against Carolside. Overall we all enjoyed it and it was a great experience, though we were all rather competitive! After we played both our matches we watched St Joseph’s play Carolside. We all showed good sportsmanship by applauding when they scored. At the end we got a certificate for participating and another for our team coming first. We hope to play more friendly tournaments and we hope everyone enjoyed it!
